TIRADE AGAINST DRESS. Decker, an old author, says "Good clothes are the embroidered trappings of pride, and good cheer the very root of gluttony. Did man, think you, come into the world wrangling about no better matters than all his life-time to search in Birchin-lane for whalebone doublets, or for pies of nightingales' tongues, in Heliogabalus's kitchen? No, no; the first suit of apparel that ever mortal man put on came neither from the mercer's shop nor the merchant's warehouse. Adam was great in nobody's silks and velvets. The silkworms had something else to do in those days than to set up looms and be free of the weavers. The patent for starch could by no means be signed."

WHAT is done well enough is done quick enough.

PEACE is that harmony in the state that health is in the body.

MEN are too apt to lay before them the actions of great men, and neglect what is more important -the motives of their models.

MAN's riches are to be estimated rather by the fewness of his wants than the greatness of his possessions.

IT is difficult to find a young fellow that is neither a wit in his own eye nor a fool in the eye of the world.

THE greatest pleasure of life is love; the greatest treasure is contentment; the greatest posses sion is health; the greatest ease is sleep; the greatest medicine is a true friend.-Sir W. Temple.

THERE is not one quality that is truly amiable in a man, which is not equally so in woman; and there is not one vice or folly which ought not to

WE are sent to the ant to learn industry; to the dove to learn innocency; to the serpent to learn wisdom; and why not go to the robin redbreast, who chants as cheerfully in winter as in summer, to learn equanimity and patience?

CONVERSATION augments pleasure and dimi nishes pain; for silent woes are greatest, and silent satisfactions least; indeed, sometimes our pleasure would be none but for telling of it, and our grief insupportable but for participation.

YOUNG trees that are full of blossom often produce small stock of fruit, or are wont to leave off bearing after a year or twain; in like manner, childhood that promiseth too much, and hath an inordinate show of learning, commonly endeth in very ordinary, and mainly in profitless man

THE WORK-TABLE FRIEND. GOLD-FISH GLOBE MAT. (Designed by Mrs. Warren.) THIS Mat is intended for a Globe whose dimensions are thirty-one inches round the thickest part of the Globe. But for whatever size it may be required, be careful to let the bottom of the Mat extend rather more than an inch beyond the size of the bottom of the Globe, then it can be made of any size, small or large, as required. 3 Shades of Emerald Green, 4 thread Berlin Wool, half an ounce of each shade: one ounce of shaded scar-hook, and draw it again through the loop on let, 8 thread Wool; 1 reel of No. 10 Evans's Drab the hook. All this forms but one stitch, Boar's Head Cotton; 20 yards of White skirt cord, and must be worked very loosely, so much the size of ordinary blind cord. When this row is completed, pull the outer edge out well, then the row this makes 1 row. Work 7 more rows, in-worked on the surface of the cotton. now done will have the appearance of being creasing in the first 3 rows, by working 2 stitches into every stitch of the preceding row; then increase at regular intervals throughout the bottom of the Mat, as may be required. After working 8 rows with the lightest shade, work 8 rows of the next shade, then 5 rows of the darkest shade; draw the cord tight, at an interval of every 12 stitches in this last row: this will form an edge to stand up round the bottom of the Mat. On this, with the same colour, work 6 rows without increasing, drawing the cord after every few stitches. This rim, as indeed all the rest, must be perfectly smooth and even.
