PREFACE.

THE following Manual is intended for the daily use of those Churchmen, who prefer the beautiful Prayers of our Liturgy, bearing as they do the sanction of the Church, to the many other forms of Family Prayer which are to be met with.

Besides the authority which these Prayers possess, two important advantages appear to arise from the disjointed form in which they are composed. First, the attention is better kept alive, or recalled, if wandering, by the assent required to be given in the "Amen," at the end of each Prayer. And, secondly, the different acts of worship (such as Confession, Intercession, Thanksgiving,) are better marked, and therefore more intelligible, when separated by a definite break, than they can be when the whole service consists, (as is the case in most Books of Family Prayer,) of one long undivided Prayer.

The order and general spirit of the Prayer Book have been, as far as possible, kept in view throughout.

The main deviations from the words of the Prayer Book, may be noticed under two heads :

1. It has always appeared to the Compiler that a form of Public Worship could not meet every requisite of Family Prayer, especially as regards the Intercessory portion. He has therefore ventured, on his own responsibility, to add two special forms of Intercession to meet this want. Intercessions from the Prayer Book are however retained for those who prefer them.

2. On all days on which it is probable that the members of the household will attend the public services of the Church, it has been thought desirable, in order to avoid repetition, to select Prayers, either from other parts of the Prayer Book besides those appointed to be used upon the days in question, or from other sources. For some of the Prayers the Compiler is himself answerable.

It may be well to notice here the 'introduction of particular Collects for certain days in the week, especially for Friday, the day of our Lord's Crucifixion. It is hoped that this may aid in bringing to mind from time to time the great central truths of our holy Religion, and especially that one Truth, on which all our hopes must rest. These Collects for particular days are distinguished by being printed a short distance within the ordinary margin.

The Table of Lessons is mainly the same as the Table of Second Lessons in the Prayer Book;

all differences being marked by brackets. It has been thought desirable to divide some of the longer chapters, where the division does not impair the continuity of the sense. This division is not how

ever made in the third recurrence of the Lessons, it being left to the reader either to read the whole, or to select a suitable portion, of each chapter.

A selection of chapters has been made from the Old Testament as a course for Family reading, which may at any time be substituted for the ordinary course of second lessons.

A want may be noted in this, as in most other Books of Family Prayer, namely of a portion devoted to Praise. It is suggested that those who have time should, either before or after the Lesson, read the Psalms for the day, or a part of them.
