Benvenuto Cellini was an Italian

artist, born in Florence, in the year 1500, and died there, February 25th, 1570. The best of his artistic works are his smaller productions in metals, the embossed decorations of shields, cups, salvers, ornamented sword and dagger-hilts, clasps, medals, and coins; but the most celebrated specimens of his skill in these branches of art, in which he showed himself a close student of Michael Angelo's works, are a richly ornamented salt-cellar in the Imperial Gallery at Vienna, and a magnificent shield at Windsor Castle. Of his larger works, the bronze group of Perseus, with the head of Medusa, in the Piazza del Gran' Duca in Florence, and his Christ, in the Chapel of the Palazzo Pitti, are the most prominent. There is a fine electrotype copy, in the Art Gallery of Vassar College, of a silver dish, now in possession of the King of Prussia, wrought by Cellini in low relief, representing the Battle with the Amazons.
