II. In this facrament, Chrift is not offered up to his Father, nor any real facrifice made at all, for remiffion of fins of the quick or dead b; but only a commemoration of that one offering up of himself, by himself, upon the cross, once for all; and a fpiritual oblation of all poffible praise unto God for the fame c; fo that the popish facrifice of the mass, as they call it, is most abominably injurious to Chrift's one only facrifice, the alone propitiation for all the fins of the elect d.
III. The Lord Jefus hath, in this ordinance, appointed his minifters to declare his word of inftitution to the people, to pray, and blefs the elements of bread and wine, and thereby to fet them apart from a common to a holy use; and to take, and break the bread, to take the cup, and (they communicating
are all partakers of that one bread. v. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils; ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. 1 Cor. xii. 13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one fpi
II. Heb. ix. 22. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without thedding of blood is no remission. v. 25. Nor yet that he fhould offer himfelf often, as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with blood of others: v. 26. (For then must he often hath fuffered fince the foundation of the world) but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away fin by the facrifice of himself, v. 28. So Chrift was once offered to bear the fins of many; and unto those that look for him, fhall he appear the fecond time, without fin, unto falvation.

IV. Private maffes, or receiving this facrament by a priest of any other alone g, as likewife the denial of the cup to the people b, worshipping the elements, the lifting them up, or carrying them about for adoration, and the referving them for any pretended religious use, are all contrary to the nature of this facrament, and to the inftitution of Christ i.
V. The outward elements in this facrament, duly fet apart to the ufes ordained by Chrift, have fuch relation to him crucified, as that truly, yet facramentally only, they are fometimes called by the name of the things they reprefent, to wit, the body and blood of Chriftk; albeit, in fubftance and na
no more offering for fin.

VI. That doctrine which maintains a change of the fubftance of bread and wine, into the fubftance of Christ's body and blood (commonly called tranfubftantiation) by confecration of a priest, or by any other way, is repugnant, not to fcripture alone, but even to common fenfe and reafon; overthroweth the nature of the facrament, and hath been and is the cause of manifold fuperftitions, yea, of grofs idolatries m.
VII. Worthy receivers, outwardly partaking of the visible elements in this facrament n, do then alfo inwardly by faith, really and indeed, yet not carnally and corporally, but fpiritually, receive and feed upon Chrift crucified, and all benefits of his death: the body and blood of Chrift being then, not corporally or carnally, in, it or under the bread and wine; yet as really, but fpiritually, prefent to the faith of believers in that ordinance, as the elements themselves are to their outward fenfes o. VIII. Altho hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets, fince the world began. With 1 Cor. xi. 24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of me. v. 25. After the fame manner alfo he took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. v. 26. (See letter 1.) Luke xxiv. 6. He is not here, but is rifen: remember how he fpake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. v. 39. Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myfelf: handle me, and fee, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as your fee me have.

Altho' ignorant and wicked men receive the outward elements in this facrament, yet they receive not the thing fignified thereby; but, by their unworthy coming thereunto, are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord, to their own damnation. Wherefore all ignorant and ungodly persons, as they are unfit to enjoy communion with him, fo are they unworthy of the Lord's table, and cannot without great fin again ft Chrift, while they remain fuch, partake of thefe holy myfteries p, or be admitted thereunto q.
