AMERICAN.

1. The Pequot war occured in 1637, and was caused by the murderous depredations of this tribe against the Colonists of Connecticut. The Pequots were totally defeated, and those not slain were sold into captivity, or joined other tribes.

2. King Philip's war commenced in 1675. Caused by a combination of the New England tribes of Indians to exterminate the Colonists. The most shocking barbarities were perpetrated until the death of their leader, Philip, by an Indian ally of the English, in 1676.

3. Bacon's Rebellion, in 1676, was caused by the tyranny of Governor Berkeley, of Virginia, and his refusal to protect the lives and property of the Colonists from Indian depredations. Public indignation became aroused, and, led by Nathanial Bacon, they secured the ends sought.

4. Lasted from 1689-1697. Upon the accession of William and Mary, the Protestants of Maryland demanded the colonial management of the territory. The Roman Catholics were overthrown in the province they had planted, and the established Church of England became the religion of the province, in 1692. The war was closed in 1697 by the "Treaty of Ryswick."

5. Clayborne's Rebellion, in 1637, was occasioned by the claim made by the Virginia colony that Lord Baltimore's grant included territory belonging to them. Clayborne, a member of the Jamestown council, having established two trading posts in Maryland, prepared to defend them by force of arms. He fled to Virginia, on the eve of battle, and his party were

defeated.

6. In 1692 a superstition prevailed in Massachusetts Colony that persons were subject to the control of invisible evil spirits; 200 persons were accused, 150 imprisoned, 28 condemned, 19 hanged, and one pressed to death, before this foolish idea was exploded.
