The Mysteries of Udolpho is a novel by Ann Radcliffe, the fourth and most well-known, published in the summer of 1794 in London. The Mysteries of Udolpho follows the story of Emily St. Aubert who suffers, among other mishaps, the death of his father, supernatural terrors in a castle, and the machinations of an Italian brigand.The Mysteries of Udolpho contains all the elements of the Gothic novel of physical and psychological terror situations, seemingly supernatural events, remote castles and ruined, the presence of an enemy and persecuted heroine. Radcliffe has many descriptions of exotic landscapes in the Pyrenees and the Apennines.Set in 1584 in southern France, the novel focuses on the story of Emily St. Aubert, a young French girl, the only daughter of a family of landowners whose fortunes are in decline. Emily and father are particularly close because of their common interest in nature. After his mother's death, Emily and her father become even closer. She accompanies him on a trip to Gascony, through the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean coast of Rousillon. During the journey, they encounter Valancourt, also attracted a handsome man, almost mystical, from the natural world. Emily and Valancourt fall in love quickly.
