PREFACE.

Of all the secular subjects of elementary instruction, Reading is certainly the most important. Learning to read is unquestionably a task for a child, and Reading Books should be so constructed as to make this task as light as possible.

Keeping this end steadily in view, the Editors of the LONDON READERS have prepared a series of Books, suitable for the successive Standards, the lessons of which are calculated to cultivate in the minds of children a love and taste for reading; to be a source of pleasant and lively interest; to excite a healthy moral influence, and to inculcate whatever is good, generous, and praiseworthy.

The Books are carefully and sufficiently graduated, both in expression and thought; and the subject matter is attractive, and entirely within the comprehension of children.

Specific Subjects have been carefully avoided as being more suitable for specially constructed manuals than for reading lessons.
