THIS little volume was written by the Author of Mrs. Markham's Histories, during the course of a long and painful, and a last, illness. A short time before her death she expressed the desire that it might be published, as a kindly "legacy to her young friends," and with the notice that she would have added a few more Sermons if she had lived.

The Author's " young friends" should also be informed that she was herself a person greatly valued and loved by all who knew her; and a very perfect and consistent example of all those principles, both of virtue and faith, which she has sought to inculcate. A 2
