The city and town of Mont

"in the seventeenth year of His Majesty, iutituled," An Ordinance for preventing "accidents by fire, and for other purposes therein-mentioned," shall after the passing of this Act, be vested in and be performed by the several members of the said fire society, and each of them shall, in the ward which shall be assigned to him, at a meeting of the said society, perform the duties imposed on the overseer or inspector of chimnies by the said section of the aforesaid Act, and in case of negligence they shall severally be liable to the like penalties, as are in and by the said section provided and imposed: Provided always that in every case where it may be necessary to prosecute for contravention to the said Act, the action shall by the said Secretary Treasurer be brought in the name of the said Society.

XXXVI. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, that by the real described Town of Montreal, shall be understood (relatively to this Act) that part or portion of the City and Town of Montreal, as described and defined by Proclamation of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Alured Clarke, on the seventh day of May, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two, which is comprehended within the following limits that is to say on the south-east the river Saint Lawrence, from Lacroix's Street as far as the little River, which discharges itself at the old Market, thence the little River to the Bridge near the little Seminary, thence south-west to McGill Street, thence the middle of McGill Street prolonged across the Commissioners' square to Craig Street, thence the middle of Craig Street to Sanguinet Street, thence the middle of Sanguinet Street to the middle of Saint Louis Street, thence the middle of Saint Louis Street to the middle of Lacroix Street, and thence the middle of Lacroix Street to the River.

XXXVII. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, that this Act shall be deemed a public Act, and shall be judicially taken notice of as such by all judges, justices of the Peace, and other persons whatever, without being specially pleaded.

XXXVIII. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, that this Act shall continue and remain in force until the first day of May, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-four, and no longer.

XXXIX. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, that the due Application application and employment of all monies to be levied by virtue of this Act, shall of the money be accounted for to His Majesty, His Heirs and Successors through the Lords ed for to His Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury for the time being, in such manner and Majesty. form as His Majesty, His Heirs or Successors shall direct.

XXXVI Et qu'il soit de plus statué par l'autorité susdite, que l'on entendra Définition de par la Ville de Montréal, pour les fins du présent Acte, cette partie ou portion la cité et ville de la Cité et Ville de Montréal, telle que désignée et définie par la Proclamation de Son Excellence le Lieutenant-Gouverneur, Alured Clarke, le septième jour de Mai, mil sept cent quatre-vingt-douze, laquelle est comprise dans les limites suivantes; c'est-à-dire, au sud-est, le Fleuve Saint Laurent, depuis la rue Lacroix, jusqu'à la Petite-Rivière qui se décharge au vieux marché, de la Petite Rivière jusqu'au Pont, près du Petit Seminaire; de là au sud-ouest à la rue McGill, de là le centre de la dite rue McGill prolongé à travers la place des Commissaires jusqu'à la rue Craig, de là le centre de la rue Craig jusqu'à la rue Sanguinet, de là le centre de la rue Sanguinet jusqu'au centre de la rue St. Louis, de là le centre de la rue St. Louis jusqu'au centre de la rue Lacroix, et de là le centre de la rue Lacroix jusqu'au fleuve.

XXXVII. Et qu'il soit de plus statué par l'autorité susdite, que cet Acte sera censé être un Acte public,et comme tel il en sera judiciairement pris connaissance par tous Juges, Juges de Paix et autres personnes quelconques, sans qu'il soit spécialement plaidé.

Weeks, William Wilson and Mary Wood, associated as a Company, under the name and style of" The Quebec Fire Assurance Company," have by their humble Petition presented to the Legislature of this Province, prayed for an Act of Incorporation, for the purpose of insuring against losses by fire: and whereas the said Association has been established in the City of Quebec, and carrying on their said business of insuring against losses by Fire, there and elsewhere, for eleven years last past, and has become of great public utility and advantage, and materially contributed to the security and relief of individuals and of the public, by greatly reducing the rates of premium formerly paid, by prompt and equitable adjustment and reimbursement of heavy losses when sustained, and by affording easier and more efficacious means of relief against the calamitous consequences of fires, than have hitherto existed in this part of His Majesty's Dominions; and whereas the said petitioners have represented that the capital of their said Association subscribed, is limited to the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand pounds, divided into two thousand five hundred shares of one hundred pounds each Be it therefore enacted by the King's Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Assembly of the Province of Lower-Canada, consituted and assembled by virtue of and under
