Preamble.

AN ACT to make a new and more convenient subdivision of the Province into Counties, for the purpose of effecting a more equal Representation thereof in the Assembly than heretofore.

14th March 1829. Presented for His Majesty's Assent, and reserved "for "the signification of His Majesty's pleasure thereon."

17th August, 1829. Assented to by His Majesty in His Council.

5th October, 1829. The Royal Assent signified by the Proclamation of His Excellency the Administrator of the Government.

HEREAS the present division of this Province, for the purpose of elect ing Members to serve in the Assembly thereof, as made by a certain Proclamation, issued by virtue of and in conformity to the provisions of the Statute in that case made and provided, by His Excellency Alured Clarke, Esquire, Lieutenant Governor, then administering the Government of this Province, bearing date at the Castle of Saint Lewis, the seventh day of May, in the year one thousand, seven hundred and ninety-two, is, by reason of the great extension of the old settlements and the formation of new settlements in remote parts of the Province, become inconvenient-And whereas the appointment of Fifty Members to serve in the Assembly, among the said divisions respectively, is, from the aforementioned causes, and the increase of the population of the Province since the date of the said Proclamation, become unequal and insufficient, for remedy thereof, and to remove as speedily and equitably as may be, the causes of the existing complaints, and uneasiness on the subject:-Be it therefore enacted by the King's Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Assembly of the Province of Lower-Canada constituted and assembled by virtue of and under the authority of an Act passed in the Parliament of Great Britain, intituled, "An Act to repeal certain parts of an Act passed in the fourteenth year of His Majesty's Reign, intituled, "An Act for making more effectual provision for the Govern ment of the Province of Quebec in North America," and for making further after the pas-provision for the Government of the said Province;" And it is hereby enactAct the Pro. ed the authority of the same, that from and after the passing of this Act, this divided in the Province shall be divided into the following Counties, which Counties shall following consist of, be bounded and limited as hereinafter described, that is to say: Counties. I. lence l'Administrateur du Gouvernement.

U la division actuelle de cette Province, aux fins d'élire des Membres Préambule. que pour servir dans l'Assemblée d'icelle, telle que faite par une certaine Proclamation émanée conformément et en vertu des dispositions du Statut fait et pourvu pour cet objet, par son Excellence Alured Clarke, Ecuyer, LieutenantGouverneur, ayant alors l'administration du gouvernement de cette Province, datée du Château Saint-Louis, le septième jour de Mai mil sept cent quatrevingt-douze, ne convient plus, à raison du grand accroissement des anciens établissemens et de la formation de nouveaux établissemens dans les parties éloignées de la Province; et vû que d'après les causes ci-dessus mentionnées, et l'augmentation de la population de cette Province depuis la date de la dite Proclamation, la répartition parmi les dites divisions respectives de cinquante Membres pour servir dans la dite Assemblée, est devenue inégale et insuffisante; pour y rémédier et faire disparoître aussi promptement et équitablement que possible les causes de plaintes et d'inquiétudes qui existent à ce sujet, Qu'il soit donc statué par la Très-Excellente Majesté du Roi, par et de l'avis et consentement du Conseil Législatif et de l'Assemblée de la Province du Bas-Canada, constitués et assemblés en vertu et sous l'autorité d'un Acte passé dans le Parlement de la Grande Bretagne, intitulé, " Acte qui rappelle certaines parties d'un Acte passé dans la "quatorzième année du Règne de Sa Majesté, intitulé, Acte qui pourvoit plus efficacement pour le Gouvernement de la Province de Québec dans l'Amérique Septentrionale;" Et qui pourvoit plus amplement pour le Gouvernement de "la dite Province:" Et il est par le présent statué par la dite autorité, que depuis et après la passation de cet Acte, cette Province sera divisée dans les Comtés suivans, lesquels Comtés consisteront, seront bornés et limités tel que ci-après décrit, savoir:

1. Le Comté de Gaspé sera borné au sud ouest par une ligne commençant à la Pointe aux Maquereaux du côté nord et à l'entrée de la Baie des Chaleurs, courant de là au nord-ouest la distance de quarante-sept miles, de là au sud, soixanteet-neuf

thence south, sixty-nine degrees west, until it intersects a line running from Cape Chat on the River Saint Lawrence, due south east, on the west by the said last mentioned line, and on the north and east by the River and Gulf of Saint Lawrence, including in the said County, the Island of Bonaventure, and all the Islands in front thereof, in whole or in part, nearest the same, as well as the Magdalen Islands in the said Gulf of Saint Lawrence, which said County so bounded, comprises the Fiefs of Saint Anne, Magdalene, Grand Vallée des Monts and Anse de l'Etang, the Bay of Gaspé, and settlements therein, Point Saint Peter, Malbay, Percé, Anse à Beaufils, Cape Despair, Grand River, Little River and Pabos, and New-Port.

2.The County of Bonaventure shall be bounded on the east and north, by the County of Gaspé, and shall consist of such part of the Inferior District of Gaspé, as is included between the said County of Gaspé and the District of Quebec, including all the Islands in front thereof, in whole or in part, nearest to the said County, which Connty so bounded, comprises the Seigniory of Shoolbred the Indian Village of Mission and the settlements above and below the same on the north of the River Ristigouche, the townships or settlements of Carlton, Maria, Richmond, Hamilton, including Bonaventure, Cox including the Town of New Carlisle, Hope including Paspebiac, La Nouvelle and Port Daniel.

3°. The County of Rimouski shall be bounded on the eastward by the InfeCounty of Ri- rior District of Gaspé, on the southward by the south west boundary line of the Seigniory of Rivière du Loup prolonged to the southern bounds of the Province, and on the north west by the River Saint Lawrence, including all the Islands in the said River Saint Lawrence, in front of the said County, in whole or in part nearest the same, which said County so bounded, comprises the Seigniories of Rivière du Loup, Isle Verte, d'Artigny, Trois Pistoles, Rioux des Trois Pistoles, Bic, Rimouski, Barnabé, Lepage, Tivierge, Mitis and Matane, and all other Seigniories and lands comprised within the said limits.

4. The County of Kamouraska shall be bounded on the north east by the County of Rimouski, on the south west by the north east boundary line of the Seigniory of Saint Roch des Aulnets, prolonged to the southern boundary of the Province, on the north west by the said River Saint Lawrence, together with the Islands in the said River Saint Lawrence, nearest to the said County, and in whole or in part, fronting the same, and on the south east by the southern boundary of the Province; which County so bounded, comprises the Seigniories of Terrebois, Granville and Lachenaye, l'Islet du Portage, Granville, Kamouraska, Saint Denis, Rivière Ouelle and its augmentation, and Sainte Anne, and the Townships of Bungay, Woodbridge and Ixworth.

2°. Le Comté de Bonaventure sera borné à l'est et au nord par le Comté de Gaspé, et comprendra la partie du District Inférieur de Gaspé qui se trouve entre Bonaventure. le dit Comté de Gaspé et le District de Québec, y comprenant toutes les Iles en front d'icelle, qui sont en tout ou en partie les plus près du dit Comté; lequel Comté ainsi borné comprendra la Seigneurie de Shoolbred, le Village ou Mission Sauvage, et les Etablissemens au-dessus et au-dessous d'icelui au nord de la Rivière Ristigouche, les Townships ou établissemens de Carleton, Maria, Richmond, Hamilton y compris Bonaventure, Cox y compris la ville de New-Carlisle, Hope y compris Paspébiac, la Nouvelle et Port Daniel.

3°. Le Comté de Rimouski sera borné à l'est par le District Inférieur de Gaspé, Bornes du au sud-ouest par la ligne du sud-ouest de la Seigneurie de la Rivière du Loup, Comté de Ri prolongée jusqu'aux limites méridionales de la Province, et au nord-ouest parent cicu, it le Fleuve Saint Laurent, comprenant toutes les Iles dans le dit Fleuve Saint Laurent les plus proches du dit Comté et vis à-vis d'icelui, en tout ou en partie; lequel dit Comté ainsi borné, comprend les Seigneuries de la Rivière du Loup, de l'Ile Verte, d'Artigny, des Trois-Pistoles, de Rioux des Trois-Pistoles, du Bic, de Rismouski, de Barnabé, de Lepage, de Tivierge, de Mitis et de Matane, et et toutes les autres Seigneuries et Terres renfermées dans les dites limites.

4. Le Comté de Kamouraska sera borné au nord-est par le Comté de Rimouski, au sud-ouest par la ligne du nord-est de la Seigneurie de Saint Roch mouraska. des Aulnets, prolongée jusqu'aux limites méridionales de la Province, au nordouest par le dit Fleuve Saint Laurent, ensemble avec toutes les Iles dans le dit Fleuve Saint Laurent, les plus proches du dit Comté, et étant en tout ou en partie f vis-à-vis d'icelui, et au sud-est par les limites méridionales de la Province; lequel Comté ainsi borné comprend les Seigneuries de Terrebois, Granville, Lachenaye, l'Ilet du Portage, Granville, Kamouraska, Saint Denis, Rivière Ouelle et son augmentation, et Sainte Anne et les Townships de Bungay, Woodbridge et Ixworth.
