Submit you to high Providence;

And ever in your noble heart prepense,
That all the sorrow in the world is less

Than virtue's might and value's confidence;

For who nill bide the burden of distress,

Must not here think to live, for life is wretchedness.

IBRAR

ADDRESS.

Ir will probably be fruitless to solicit that prompt attention to this small work, which can rarely be obtained for a fugitive publication, with no name of renown attached to it to bespeak favour, no captivating title to raise expectation, and no mystery about it to excite interest or curiosity respecting the author or the contents. Had not reasons, more warrantable than vanity, and less presuming than ambition, urged the necessity of thus appealing to public liberality, in the humble hope of securing some

a

benefit to the writer, as well as communicating some pleasure to the reader, the pieces intended for this volume would never have been obtruded beyond their original destination, which was either the solitary delight of expressing occasional feelings, too ardent to be utterly restrained, or the innocent gratification of a few friends, who loved the song, because they loved the minstrel. Should a work so unpretending, meet with effectual patronage from those who may be willing for once to try the merits of a publication, which promises nothing for itself, and offers them nothing but an opportunity of showing kindness to a stranger, who dare not even disclose her name to her benefactors, those benefactors may be assur

ed, that, though they may not have done it

to one who is worthy of their regard, they have done it to one who will be unfeignedly

and unceasingly grateful for the least token of their benevolence.
