The Wisdom that first urg'd the grand designs,
Ere yet Light's flag o'er Chaos was unfurl'd;

There would we see-and bless the glorious source!
Why he has flown-whom soft affections mourn!
Though now we may not-yet, his gentle course
Leaves Hope, thro' Innocence, to grace his Urn.
Him we had fondly kept from endless joys→→
From joys eternity will long outlast!

To share our fates-whom happiness still flies-
And live expos'd to Death's still low'ring blast!

Hence, let Religion, Piety, convey

Our thoughts-by grief's dark gale, at random driven,
Up to the confines of eternal day,

To see him soar through realms of joyous Heaven.
Thence will we prove the vanity of man,
The bustling scenes and brevity of life;
The space for pleasure bounded in a span,
While all its borders are with misery rife!

There shall we see the hearts that virtue bore,
Through all the boisterous troubles of Life's sea;
'Midst hymns and praises of the Eternal soar,
Through regions blest of immortality.

Then cease, thou venerable friend to truth,
Thy grief, though eloquent, and tears, are vain {
To Heaven look forward, thou wilt meet the youth
Where nought shall part your mutual souls again.

Though thou has lost thy darling son-thy friend-
Yet comfort resignation will impart :

Such youthful goodness Heaven does seldom lend-
And when the time is short!-hence comes the smart.
Oh, cease to mourn! Heav'n has but claim'd its own!
Hence, let thy feeling tears no longer flow,
They who enjoy not Hope have cause to mourn,
When friends are summon'd from this vale of woe!
But Heaven has said-" The righteous, virtuous man,
And his posterity, shall never die!"

Hence, judging by the Almighty's generous plan,
Did he thou mourn'st to endless blessings fly,
To drink th Eternal's smiles beyond th' empyrean sky.

THE SUMMER SHOWER.

See the little sunshine shower,
Hangs trembling on the leafy bower,
And wets the face of ilka flower,
That nods upon the verdant lea :
See the insect's feeble wing,
Now wanton thro' the airy spring,
And spider in the cobweb hing,
In shelter of the hawthorn tree.

The water'd zypher mildly blows,
Renews the bloom of scorch'd rose,
And cheers the smile of all that grows
Be't either flower or grassy blade.
The swallows skipping thro' the wood,
Or winging smooth along the flood,
Or dibbling in the marshy mud,

Syne wing to winnock-top or shed.
See Phoebus' shrouded watery beam,
Pale glimmers with dull muffled gleam,
As he peeps thro' the ether stream,
That floats on aerial car.
Now Nature's life's renew'd again,
And sweetest fragrance scents the plain;
And ev❜ning breeze the fog shall drain
To shew serene the twilight star.

SPAIN.-On Russia great hopes of assistance are reposed in subduing the American colonies. An inundation of Russian troops destined to this object is talked of, and this last calamity which can befal these unfortunate regions is confidently anticipated. An expedition of Spanish troops, to the amount of 15 or 20,000, is likewise preparing; and the singularity is, that those soldiers and officers who are considered as disaffected are destined for that service, for the purpose, it is said, of removing out of the way suspicious characters.-Sublime policy!

FRANCE Desbans and Chayoux, who plotted the assassination of Monsieur and his sons, were shot in the plain of Grenelle on the 6th inst. They displayed to the last a degree of fortitude worthy of a better cause. Chayoux, upon recollecting that he was, previous to the execution, to be degraded from the Legion of Honour, tore off the ribband and cross, and swallowed them both, to defeat that part of the ceremony by which he would have been stripped of those insignia.

GERMANY. A new scheme of finance has been prepared for the kingdom of Hanover, which is distinguished by the establish, ment of an Income Tax The rate is very low, not being more than one per cent. from the revenue of real property.-A rate so low would hardly compensate for the odium which the imposi tion of such a tax must create; but the present amount is pro bably intended to obviate clamour, and the principle being once established, the tax will no doubt be made productive in future.

AMERICA. In the last fortnight of July 2272 emigrants had arrived at New York, of which 1415 were from Great Britain, 826 from Germany, and 31 from France. One ship arrived from Holland at Philadelphia, with 470 passengers, 50 of whom died on the passage,

SOUTH AMERICA-Some fresh accounts represent Sir Gregor McGregor to be maintaining possession of Amelia Island, There has been hard fighting about the beginning of last month, the result of which was in favour of the patriots.

RUSSIA. The Emperor has left Petersburgh for the purpose of inspecting various parts of his extensive dominions.

British Compendium.

The most interesting and grateful topic of the day springs from the highly favourable weather with which Providence has blessed this country. The abundance of the crops is not more the theme of gratulation than the propitious circumstances under which they are reaped and carried from the field. In England the bu siness of the harvest is far advanced-with us a beginning has only been made, but, we trust, it will be brought to a conclu sion under equal advantages.

In a national point of view, the blessings of a luxuriant crop, well gathered, may be estimated in some degree from the following facts-The quantity of grain grown annually, in the Island of Great Britain, amounts to 30 millions of quarters, of 8 bushels, which, taken at the average of L.3 per quarter, is of the value of L.90,000,000. Of this quantity about 5,000,000 quarters may be gathered in the month of August, and 5,000,000 in the month of October, leaving 20,000,000 to be reaped in the month of September: this is an average of 5 millions of quarters a week, which taken at the rate of L.3 per quarter, produces 15 millions in each week of September. During the present week, this 15 millions of property, it may be presumed, has been secured, and this immense sum, circulating first as food, and then as capital, through the different orders of society, must create a vast fund of riches, and keep at home that money which we are accustomed to expend, in an unproductive year, in fo reign grain. It may seem increditable to those who have not turned their attention to such subjects, but it is a fact, resting upon no less authority than the Customhouse books, that during the year 1802, grain and flour, to the value, at the average market price, at that time, of L.10,142,098 sterling, were imported into this country; and in the course of 15 years, ending with the year 1813, the sum paid by this country to foreigners, for grain and flour, amounted to L.46,582,776, for which immense expenditure our population obtained the average relief of only one week's consumption in each year.Eng. paper.

A letter from Lima has appeared in the West Briton newspaper, which says, that Don Ricardo Trevithick, or according to his English description, Capt. Kichard Trevethick, a Cornish miner and engineer, had arrived at that place for the purpose of supplying the mines of South America with steam engines on an improved principle of his invention; that several had already been set to work in the district of Pasco with the greatest sue> cess; and that a great many more were in a course of erection. The event thus recorded, however apparently insignificant, may be, and probably will be, followed by consequences the most

important to this country and to Europe. This will be evident. when we recoilect the quantity of precious metals raised in the mines of South America, under all the disadvantages which ignorance and want of machinery have opposed to the prosecution of such adventures; and the change which even a limited supply thus derived has produced in the value of money, and thereby, in the political and economical relations of European society.

A curious circular letter of the Prussian Government, on the subject of distinctions in Religion, has appeared in a Minden paper.The King, through the Minister of the Interior, intimates his pleasure, that the words " Protestant"-" Lutheran"-and other terms expressive of diversity of opinion, in regard to the reformed creed, shall in future be superseded by the phraseEvangelical Christians."-But until his Majesty convinces his subjects that they hold in fact the same tenets, it will be in vain to deny them the use of different names.

MISCELLANEA.

Extract of a letter from Glasgow, to the Editor, Sept. 22. "Trade is reviving here, and comfort appears to have entered the threshold of many houses. Weavers are now beginning to sing, and dance home with legs of lamb in one hand, and cash in the other. The weather also is favourable: and ere long I hope to see trade run in its old channel, with this difference, that its current will continue more regular, and longer."

Cotton Yarn has advanced fully 7 per cent. in Glasgow; and considerable sales have been effected.-The quantity of Cotton this year in Scotland is supposed to be a tenth more than in any former year.
