"I used to sit beside it then,

And watch it many an hour;
At length above its clustering leaves
There brightly bloomed a flower.

"And as I saw the buds unfold,
I felt that GOD was near;
And then I loved to pray to Him,
And knew that He would hear.

"I prayed that you might stay with us,
Or, if that could not be,

I asked, that He who made my flowers,
Would then watch over me.

"And now I know, my mother dear,
Our Father's tender care,

Has made you almost well again;
-Did He not hear my prayer?

"I'm glad He did not take you then To go to live in heaven;

You'll teach me still to love Him more,

By whom all things are given.'

THE BIBLE.

THY WILL BE DONE.

SEARCHER OF HEARTS! from mine erase
All thoughts that should not be,
And in its deep recesses trace
My gratitude to Thee!

Hearer of Prayer! oh, guide aright
Each word and deed of mine;
Life's battle teach me how to fight,
And be the victory Thine.

Giver of All!-for every good
In the REDEEMER came ;-
For raiment, shelter, and for food,

I thank Thee in His Name.

G. P. MORRIS.

THE BIBLE.

OH! never on this holy Book
With careless, cold indifference look ;
If thou art sad, come here and find
A balm to soothe and cheer the mind;
here are songs

If thou art merry,
Fit to be sung by angel tongues;

If thou art rich in things of earth,
Learn here thy wealth is nothing worth;
If thou art poor, this precious mine
Hath countless treasures-all are thine.

HYMN.

I WANT to be like JESUS,
So lovely and so meek;
For no one marked an angry word,
That ever heard Him speak.

I want to be like JESUS,
So frequently in prayer;
Alone upon the mountain-top,
He met His Father there.

I want to be like JESUS,
For I never, never find
That He, though persecuted, was
To any one unkind.

I want to be like JESUS,

Engaged in doing good,

So that it may of me be said,
"She hath done what she could.

Alas! I'm not like JESUS,

As any one may see;

O gentle SAVIOUR, send Thy grace And make me like to Thee!

THE CHILD'S DESIRE.

"LOVE ONE ANOTHER."

CHILDREN, do you love each other?
Are you always kind and true?
Do you always do to others

As

you

'd have them do to you?
Are you gentle to each other?
Are you careful, day by day,
Not to give offence by actions,
Or by anything you say?

Little children, love each other,
Never give another pain;
If your brother speak in anger,
Answer not in wrath again.
Be not selfish to each other,-
Never mar another's rest;

Strive to make each other happy,
And you will yourselves be blest.

THE CHILD'S DESIRE.

I THINK, when I read that sweet story of old,
When JESUS was here among men,

How He called little children, as lambs to His fold,
I should like to have been with them then.

I wish that His hands had been placed on my head, That His arms had been thrown around me,

And that I might have seen His kind look when He said,

"Let the little ones come unto ME."

But still, to His footstool in prayer I may go,
And ask for a share of His love;

And if I thus earnestly seek Him below,
I shall see Him and hear Him above.

In that beautiful place He has gone to prepare
For all that are washed and forgiven;
And many dear children are gathering there,
"For of such is the kingdom of heaven."

MRS. LUKE.

A SACRED MELODY.

BE Thou, O GOD! by night, by day,
My Guide, my Guard from sin,
My Life, my Trust, my Light Divine,
To keep me pure within ;-

Pure as the air when day's first light
A cloudless sky illumes,

And active as the lark, that soars

Till heaven shine round its plumes.
