15 it to his cross; and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

16

Let no man therefore judge you 2 in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an 17 holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of 18 things to come; but the body is of Christ. Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into 19 those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

20

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, 21 as though living in the world, are ve subject to ordinances, (touch not; taste 22 not; handle not; which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments 23 and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and 7 neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

8

3 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, 2,3 not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ 4 in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5 MORTIFY therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is 6 idolatry for which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of 7 disobedience: in the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy com 9 munication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have 10 put off the old man with his deeds; and have put on the new man, which is 11 renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, 13 kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another,

and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as 14 Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, 15 which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with 17 grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

18

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the 21 Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. 22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with 23 eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: and what24 soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord 25 Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

ALL my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and 8 a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; 9 with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.

Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, 11 receive him;) and Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a 12 comfort unto me. Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect 13 and complete in all the will of God. For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.

Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church 16 which is in his house. And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the 17 epistle from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.

which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto

you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our 3 prayers; remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our 4, 5 Father: knowing, brethren 3 beloved, your election of God. For our Gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for 6 your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received 7 the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: so that ye were en8 samples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak 9 any thing. For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true 10 God; and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1 Or, striving.

2 Or, filled.

3 Or, beloved of God, your election.

2

For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain: but even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, 2 as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the Gospel 3 of God with much contention. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of 4 uncleanness, nor in guile: but as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the Gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth 5 our hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor 6 a cloak of covetousness; God is witness: nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the 7 apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth 8 her children: so being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the Gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because 9 ye were dear unto us. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, 10 we preached unto you the Gospel of God. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: 11 as ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a 12 father doth his children, that ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

13

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that 14 believe. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judæa are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own 15 countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, 16 and are contrary to all men: forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to

the uttermost.

17 BUT we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. 18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but 19 Satan hindered us. For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of 3 rejoicing? Are 20 not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? For ye are our glory and joy.

3 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone; and sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our 2 fellowlabourer in the Gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you 3 concerning your faith: that no man should be moved by these afflictions: "for 4 yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came 5 to pass, and ye know. For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our

6

labour be in vain.

But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us 7 always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you: therefore, brethren, we 8 were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith: for now 9 we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God; 10 night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

11

Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our 12 way unto you. And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one 13 toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: to the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

4 FURTHERMORE then we beseech you, brethren, and 6 exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to 2 please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what command

3 ments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your 4 sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you 5 should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; not in the 6 lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: that no man go beyond and defraud his brother 2 in any matter: because that the Lord is 7 the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God 8 hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that 3 despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you for ye 10 yourselves are taught of God to love one another. And indeed ye do it toward

all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, 11 that ye increase more and more; and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your 12 own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack 4 of nothing.

13 BUT I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which 14 are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus 15 will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not 16 prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: 17 and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: 18 and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

5 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a 2, 3 thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a 5 thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day we are not 6 of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let 7 us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be 8 drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of sal9 vation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our 10 Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should 11 live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 AND we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, 13 and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we 7exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE

TO THE

THESSALONIANS.

1 PAUL, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace,

2 from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all to4 ward each other aboundeth; so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that 5 ye endure which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye 6 may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer. Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble 7 you; and to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be 8 revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the pre10 sence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

9

11

Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of 12 faith with power: that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2

NOW we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, 2 or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that 3 the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin 4 be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will 8 let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed,

whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy 9 with the brightness of his coming: even him, whose coming is after the working 10 of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the 11 love of the truth, that they might be saved. 12 them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be And for this cause God shall send damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through 14 sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: whereunto he called you by our Gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been 16 taught, whether by word, or our epistle. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting 17 consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.
