Over 1300 entries to poems, novels, short stories, and plays published mostly during the 20th century. Selection remains based on the principle that "a literary work should be first-rate, or if not, then capable of illuminating in some special way one or more of our directly medical topics." Emphases on English and American literature; on materials by and about blacks; and about handicapped persons. Citations are arranged under chronological headings. Each entry gives bibliographical information, topical words, and summary. References are also listed under 39 topical words.
