But it feems more probable to me, that the true Lection is and; for t is the Particle which usually correfponds to ; and would be particularly suitable here after a Comparison, which continues for fix Verfes. And the Syriac, LXX, and Arabic, feem to have read the Pronoun as here propofed. If this Reading be admitted, the Sense will be- THUS ARE YE NOW

That is here a Verb, may be concluded from the preceding Hemiftic; and that it has the Signification contended for, or of difperfing and scattering with a Blaft, cannot I think be doubted from the Ufe of the Noun.

V. 29. Return, I pray you, let it not be Iniquity; yea, return again,

Rather, I think ---RETURN, I PRAY YOU, LEST IT BE INIQUITY: YEA, RETURN AGAIN TO JUSTIFY ME IN THIS. In this Book the Infinitive with the Affix is ufed precifely in this Form, viz. PT, to justify him, and PT to justify thee, Ch. XXXII. 2. XXXIII. 32.

given is a good one: but the Words of the Text will not bear it. The following is certainly nearer the Original, viz. WHO WILL DETEST HIS OWN EXPECTATION.

V. 17. His Roots are wrapped about the Heap, Rather ABOUT A FOUNTAIN, as in the old Verfion. fignifies a Fountain, Jof. XV. 19.

Thefe [בית אבנים יחזה : .and Jeeth the Place of Stones

Words are so obscure, that the Integrity of the Text may reasonably be questioned. There is no Doubt that the LXX and Vulgate read here and '; from which flight Alteration a better Sense may be deduced, viz. HE LIVETH BETWEEN THE STONES.

V. 19. If I fpeak of Strength, lo, he is strong : As the Particle is always put firft in a Sentence; it is probable that it is here a Miftake for or 8, which are generally used in fimilar Cafes. The Particle feems to fignify here IN RESPECT TO, OF IN REGARD OF; and D may be conftrued TRULY, as Pf.CXXXIX. 19. Prov. XXIII. 18. et paffim. Thus moft of the ancient Verfions confidered them.

-I will leave off my Heaviness: ] I cannot find ever fignifies Heavinefs: it is ufed for ANGER, Lam. IV. 16. which Senfe might be here adopted.

There Words feem rather to fignify - GoD [ישה לך אלוה מעונך :

COVERETH (literally maketh to be forgotten) A PART OF THINE INIQUITY. Thus - Blessed is he whofe Sin is COVERED. Pf. XXXII.1. and LXXXV. 2. Thou hast COVERED all their Sin. See also Prov. X. 12.

V. 17.

-thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the Morning.

a Senfe תעפה How our Verfion came to give [תעפה כבקר תהיה :

directly contrary to that which the Verb y, from which it is derived, conftantly has, I cannot imagine. This particular Word occurs no where else: but by its Form must be a Noun, and fignify DARKNESS: There can therefore be no Doubt, that this Hemistic ought thus to be

V. 5. He that is ready to flip with his Feet, is as a Lamp defpifed in the Thought of him that is at Eafe.

Prepofition and a Misfortune: I would therefore render literally thus To CALAMITY is CONTEMPT, IN THE THOUGHTS OF HIM THAT IS AT EASE, PREPARED FOR THE SLIPPING FOOT which may be thus paraphrased Calamity generally meets with Contempt from the profperous Man, whofe Self-Conceit makes him ready to attribute the Misfortunes of others to Want of Prudence or "Conduct." This was exactly Job's Cafe with his Friends.
