A. Under the New Testament Chrift hath inftituted in his church only two facraments, baptifm, and the Lord's fupperd. Q. 165. What is baptifm?

A. Baptifm is a facrament of the New Teftament, wherein Christ hath ordained the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghofte, to be a fign and feal of ingrafting into himfelff, of remiffion of fins by his blood g, and regeneration by his Spirit h; of adoption i, and refurrection unto everlafting lifek: and whereby the parties baptized are folemnly admitted into the visible church, and enter into an open and profeffed engagement to be wholly and only the Lord's m.

Q. 166. Unto whom is baptifm to be adminiftred?

A. Baptifm is not to be adminiftred to any that are out of the vifible church, and so strangers from the covenant of promife, till

Q. 167. How is our baptifm to be improved by us?"

A The needful but much neglected duty of improving our baptifm is to be performed by us all our life long, especially in the

For the unbelieving hufband is fanctified by the wife, and the un believing wife is fanctified by the hufband: elfe were your children unclean: but now they are holy. Mat. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghoft. Luke xviii.15. And they brought unto him alfo in

Gen. xvii. 7. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy feed after thee, in their geerations for an everlasting covenant; to be a God unto thee, and to thy feed after thee. V. 9. and God faid unto Abraham, Thou fhalt keep my covenant therefore, thou and thy feed after thee, in their generations. Compared with Gal. iii. 9. So then they who be of faith, are bleffed with faithful Abraham. v. 14. That the blefling of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jefus Chrift; that we might receive the promife of the Spirit through faith. And with Col. ii. 11. the time of temptation, and when we are prefent at the adminiftration of it to others p, by ferious and thankful confideration of the nature of it, and of the ends for which Chrift instituted it, the privileges and benefits conferred and fealed thereby and our folemn vow made therein q; by being humbled for our finful defilement, our falling fhort of, and walking contrary to, the grace of baptifm and our engagements r; by growing up to affurance of pardon of fin, and of all other bleflings fealed to us in that facrament/ by drawing strength from the death and refurrection of Christ, into whom we are baptized, for the mortifying

Likewife reckon ye alfo yourselves to be dead indeed unto fin, but alive unto God through Jefus Christ our Lord.

Is Chrift divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? Rom. vi. 2. God forbid: how fhall we that are dead to fin, live any longer therein? v. 3. Know ye not, that fo many of us as were baptized into Jefus Chrift, were baptized into his death?

of fin, and quickening of gracet; and by endeavouring to live. by faith, to have our converfation in holiness and righteoufnefs w, as thofe that have therein given up their names to Christ x, and to walk in brotherly love, as being baptized by the fame Spirit into one body y.

Q. 168. What is the Lord's Supper?

A. The Lord's fupper is a facrament of the New Teftament z, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine according to the appointment of Jefus Chrift, his death is fhewed forth; and they that worthily communicate, feed upon his body and blood, to their fpiritual nourishment and growth in grace a;

to them who are not of the circumcifion only, but alfo walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcifed. Pet. iii. 21. The like figure whereunto, even baptifm, doth also now fave us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the anfwer of a good confcience towards God) by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift.

Q. 169. How hath Chrift appointed bread and wine to be given and received in the facrament of the Lord's Supper?

A. Christ hath appointed the minifters of his word, in the administration of this facrament of the Lord's fupper, to set apart the bread and wine from common ufe by the word of inftitution, thanksgiving and prayer; to take and break the bread and to give both the bread and the wine to the communicants: who are by the fame appointment to take and eat the bread,and to drink the wine; in thankful remembrance that the body of Christ was broken and given, and his blood shed for them f. Q. 170. How do they that worthily communicate in the Lord's fupper feed upon the body and blood of Christ therein? A. As the body and blood of Chrift are not corporally or carnally prefent in, with, or under the bread and wine in the Lord's

1 Cor. x. 16. The cup of blef fing which we blefs, is it not the communion of the blood of Chrift? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Chrift?
