PREFACE.

THE reader is earnestly requested while perusing this Letter to have the Prayer Book by him, and for his own satisfaction to refer to all the passages quoted thence. The labour will be small, and the benefit far from inconsiderable. If he have the Doctor's Sermon at hand also, he will be better able to judge of the fairness of this reply, by himself testing the references and the quotations made from it.

LETTER I.

MY LORD,

THE inspired records of the far distant past inform us that a shepherd-lad went by his father's directions from sheep-keeping to the camp. That when he heard the bold defier of his people and his God, his spirit was stirred within him, and in the same strength as he had slain the lion and the bear, he went forth with his sling and his five smooth stones against the champion of Gath, and by that strength prevailed. So, my Lord, have I ventured forth from one of the nooks of the world; and for a moment leaving my sheep in the safety of their mountain-homes, have entered the lists against the champion of (as I think) the opposers of our Church's doctrine. But this is no personal contest. I am but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth, and therefore had it been a question of individual capability or power, I should have declined the unequal
