OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY: FOUR LECTURES, BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL, ON WORDSWORTH, MONTGOMERY, BY ALEXANDER S. PATTERSON, D.D., GLASGOW. GLASGOW: THOMAS MURRAY AND SON. PREFATORY NOTE. THE following Lectures were delivered in Glasgow last year, in connection with an Association for Mutual Improvement-chiefly consisting of young men-in the Author's congregation. Though hastily composed, they were kindly received; and, in consenting to their publication, he hopes that the little work, notwithstanding its many imperfections, may serve, though in a humble degree, to guide the studies and elevate the taste of ingenuous youth, and, even beyond that interesting and important class, to diffuse the knowledge of a few striking and instructive specimens of life and character.
