waters into their beds, and to dry the earth. 2. The fountains of the deep, and the flood gates of heaven being stopped, the heavy rain from heaven being restrained; 3. So that the waters went off the earth gradually and at the end of an hundred and fifty days, they were so much assuaged, that the ark ceased to float: 4. And rested upon Ararat, one of the mountains of Armenia, on the twenty-seventh day of the seventh month (April), after the rain was restrained. 5. And the waters decreased continually, until the first day of the tenth month (July), when the tops of the mountains were visible.

6. At the end of forty days more, Noah opened a window in the ark; 7. And set out a raven, which went forth, going out, and returning thither, until the waters were dried up from the earth. 8. He next set out a dove, in order to know if the waters were removed; 9. But she finding no place to rest on, returned to the ark, as the waters still covered the face of all the ground; so he received her into the ark. 10. Having waited seven days more, he set out the dove again; 11. And she returned in the evening, with an olive leaf in her mouth, which she had plucked from the tree, whereby he knew that the waters were abated. 12. And having waited other seven days, he sent forth the dove again, which returned to him no more.

13. It was in the six hundred and first year of Noah's life, on the first day of the first month (October), when the waters were drying up from the earth, that Noah removed part of the covering of the ark, and saw that the face of the ground was dry. 14. And on the twenty-seventh day of the second month, it was so fully dried, that the cattle could walk upon it. it. 15. Then the Eternal said to Noah, 16. Go out of the ark, with thy wife, and thy sons, and their wives. 17. Bring out with thee also every living creature, whether fowls, or beasts, or creeping things, that they may propagate, and

multiply, and replenish the earth. 18. So Noah and his family, 19. And all living creatures, went out of the ark.

A new Covenant granted to Noah.

20. Noah now builded an altar to the Eternal; and of every clean beast, and clean bird, he offered holocausts, as sacrifices on the altar; 21. Which the Eternal accepted, and determined to inflict no such curse, or desolation, as a punishment, on the ground again, for man's sake, though his heart from his youth be disposed to evil; nor to destroy in such a manner every living creature. 22. While the earth remained, seed-time and harvest, summer and winter, cold and heat, shall neither by night nor by day be interrupted.

CHAP. IX.

GOD then blessed Noah and his sons; and said to them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. 2. And the fear and terror of you shall be upon every fowl of the air, and every beast of the earth, 3. And every thing that moveth upon it; and on all the fishes of the sea, to you they shall be subject, and be for food, as well as vetegables.

4. But you shall not eat flesh with the blood, which is the life thereof. 5. And I will surely punish the shedding of your blood (the taking away of your life); even every beast that doth it shall be put to death; and of every man that sheddeth another's blood will I thus require it. 6. Whoever sheddeth any man's blood (as all men being made of one blood, are brethren, and equally bear the impression of the divine wisdom and power, being the divine likeness and workmanship), by man shall his blood be shed. 7. So be ye fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

8. God said also to Noah and his sons, 9. Lo, now, I establish my covenant with you, and your seed after you; 10. And with every living creature

that went out of the ark with you, birds, and cattle, and wild beasts, and creeping things; 11. That there shall no more be a flood of waters to desolate the earth, and destroy all living creatures. 12. The token of the covenant which I make between me and you, and every living creature, for all ages, 13. Is the rainbow, which I place in the cloud, when I bring it over the earth; 14. So that when a cloud appears, with a bow in it, 15. I will remember my Covenant between me, and you, and every living thing. 16. My perpetual covenant, 17. I establish between me and all flesh living on the earth.

From the Flood to Noah's Death.

20. The whole earth was re-peopled by Shem, and Ham the father of Canaan, and Japheth, 19. Noah's three sons. 20. Noah now began to cultivate the ground, and planted a vine-yard, and drank of the wine. 21. 21. [And being intoxicated, he lay uncovered in his tent. 22. Then Ham, the Father of Canaan, saw his Father's nakedness, (of which his son had informed him); and he told his brothers, who were without. 23. Then Shem and Japheth laid a garment upon their shoulders, and went backward, and covered their Father's nakedness, without seeing it]. 24. When Noah awaked from his wine, [and knew what his grandson had done], 25. He said, (Ham the Father of) Canaan is accursed; he shall be the lowest of servants to his brethren; 26. But Shem is blessed of the Eternal God; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27. God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the inheritance of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 28. Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. 29. So all the years of Noah were about nine hundred and fifty; and he died.

2. The sons of Japheth were seven; Gomer, (hence the northern Germans and ancient Gauls, the Cimerians, Cymbrians, or Ambrians, north of Palestine, and the Phrygians in the north of Asia the less by the Black sea; and some Capadocians; see Josephus, Herodotus, Pliny, Strabo, Plutarch, Ezek. xxxvii. xxxviii. Dan. xi. 6). Magog, (northward on the Black sea, the land of Gog in Scythia, near Mount Caucasus, and Mesheh and Tubal, (hence the Getæ, Sarmatians, and some Tartars). Madai, (hence the Medes, Mysians, and Illyrians, west in Asia by the Archipelago, and the Macedonians, and Britons). Javan, or Ion, (hence the I-·· onians in Asia the less by the Mediterranean sea, and the Greeks in general in Europe, whereof some removed to Asia the less. All the Greeks every where were called Ionians by the Hebrews, Chaldeans, Arabians, &c.) Tubal, (hence the Iberians of Asia, Celtiberians, Spaniards, and Russians, southeast of the Black sea). Mesheh (hence the Muscovites, Scythians, Tuscans, Mysians). Tiras (hence the Trojans and Thracians). 3. The sons of Gomer, Askenaz, (hence the Goths, Ascanians, and Germans, who peopled Europe, from Phrygia Minor, in Asia the Less, and people of the Cimerian Bosphorus, Bythinia, Pontus, some Trojans, &c.) Riphath or Diphath, 1 Chron. i. 6. (hence the Ri

Cicilians, (Tyre, Carthage, and some Spaniards; Tarsus, a name common to places on the sea). Kittim, sea coasts, (hence the Cretes, Cyprians, some Macedonians, Italians, &c.) Dodanim, (hence people in Doris, Epirus, and Rhodes).

5. By these in their respective lands were the isles of the Gentiles distinguished according to their dialects, tribes, and nations. (The Hebrews called all places Islands to which they went by sea, as Crete, Cyprus, &c, especially Europe. Isaiah xi. 11. &c.)

6. The sons of Ham, were four, Chush, (who settled in a region of Mesopotamia; hence Chusistan). His progeny afterwards removed to the south of Arabia east of the Red Sea, (hence Sabeans, Midianites, Amalekites, and Ethiopians, west of the Red Sea on the south of Egypt). Mizraim (planted Upper and Lower Egypt). Phut (planted Lybia in Afri ca, west of Egypt), hence Pythius who slew dragons there; and the Moors by the Atlantic, the connexion of Africa with America, which being swallowed up by an earthquake, (see Plato's Cratylus and Timeus, hence that ocean's name).
