Reu, being an hundred and thirty-two years old, begat Serug; 21. After which he lived two hundred and seven years, and had other sons and daughters. 22. Serug, being an hundred and thirty years old, begat Nahor; 23. After which he lived two hundred years, and had other sons and daughters. 24. Nahor, being seventy nine years old, begat Terah; 25. After which, he lived an hundred and nineteen years, and had other sons and daughters. 26. Terah, being seventy years old, begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. 27. And Haran the oldest begot Lot. 28. Haran died before his father Terah, in Ur, of the Chaldees, (Gen. xxii. 22. Chasdees) his native land. 29. Abram and Nahor took wives. Abram's was named Sarai; and Nahor's was named Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah, and Ischah, 30. But Sarai was barren. 31. Then Terah took Abram (and Nahor), his sons, and Lot his grandson, with Sa

rai (and Milcah), his daughters-in-law; and departed from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into Canaan: but when they came to Haran, they dwelt there. 32. And Terah, being an hundred and forty-five years old, died in Haran.

CHAP. XII.

THE CALL AND HISTORY OF ABRAHAM AND HIS POSTERITY. A. M. CIR. 2000.

The Eternal had then said to Abram, Depart from thy country, thy kindred, and thy father's house; and go to a land which I will shew thee: 2. For I will bless thee, and make of thee a great nation; and make thy name so great, that it shall be a term of benediction. 3. I will also bless them that bless thee, and detest them that despise thee; for in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. (Gal. iii. 3, 14, 16.) 4. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5. He took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother's son, with all the wealth they had acquired, and the persons they had converted from idolatry in Haran, and set out with them to go into Canaan: and being come into it, (for the Canaanites were then in the the land), 6. He went through it as far as Sichem, in the plain of Moreh; 7. When the Eternal, to whom he built there an altar, appeared to him, and said, To thy seed will I give this land. 8. From thence he removed to the height eastward of Bethel, where he pitched his tent; having Bethel on the west, and Ĥai on the east. He built an altar there also to the Eternal, and worshipped him, praying to him.

9. Now Abram continued his journey, southward. 10. But there being a grievous famine in the land, he went to sojourn in Egypt. 11. Now, when he was on the borders of Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, thou art beautiful; 12. And the Egyptians

will perhaps say, this is his wife; and kill me, in order to have thee. 13. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister; that my life may thereby be preserved, that it may be well with me for thy sake. 14. It happened accordingly, when they were come into Egypt, that the Egyptians observed she was beautîful. 15. Courtiers having also seen her, and commended her to Pharaoh, she was taken into his house. 16. Now Abram was well used for her sake, and had flocks, herds, mules, asses, camels, menservants, and maid-servants. 17. But the Eternal plagued Pharaoh and his house greatly, because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18. Pharaoh, therefore, called Abram, and said, Why hast thou done this to me? Why didst thou not tell me, that she was thy wife? 19. Why saidst thou, She is my sister? thereby. I might have taken her to be my wife. Take now, therefore, thy wife, and go away. 20. Pharaoh also commanded his men concerning him: and they conducted him away safely, with his wife, and all that they had.

CHAP. XIII.

ABRAM RETURNS FROM EGYPT TO CANAAN.

So Abram went out of Egypt, with his wife and all that he had, to the south part of Canaan, and Lot accompanied him. 2. Now he was very rich, in cattle, in silver, and in gold. 3. He continued his journey from the south, as far as Bethel, to the place where he had his tent at first, between Bethel and Hai; 4. Where he had formerly made an altar, and invoked the Eternal's name by prayer, giving thanks for his preservation. 5. Lot, his brother's son, also had flocks, herds, and tents: 6. Their substance was so great, that the land had not sufficient support for them to dwell together. 7. There was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and those of Lot's; the Canaanites also, and the Perez

ites, were then in the land. 8. Abram therefore said to Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and my herdmen and thine; for we are kinsmen. 9. The whole land is before thee, depart from me, I pray thee. If thou go to the right hand (i. e. southward), I will go to the left (i. e. northward), and if thou go to the left, I will go to the right. 10. Lot therefore looked, and saw that the whole plain and banks of Jordan were well watered all the way to Zoar, as Paradise, or the land of Egypt, before the Eternal destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11. So he chose for himself all the plains of Jordan, and journeyed eastward. Thus they separated. 12. Abram dwelt in Canaan, and Lot dwelt among the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent by Sodom. 13. Now Sodom's inhabitants were exceedingly wicked, being very great sinners in the Eternal's sight. 14. The Eternal said to Abram, after he and Lot were separated, look now northward, and southward, eastward and westward; 15. For I will give all the land thou seest to thy seed perpetually; 16. And I will make them exceeding numerous: 17. Go walk through the length and the breadth of this land, which I will give thee. 18. Then Abram removed his tent, and went to the plain of Mamre, an Amorite, by Hebron, where he settled, and built an altar to the Eternal.

CHAP. XIV.

THE WAR OF THE KINGS, AND CONQUEST OF SODOM, &c. A. M. CIR. 1925.

Ir happened in those days that Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Elasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations, 2. Made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela, which is now Zoar. 3. All these last convened in the vale of Siddim, which

is now the Salt (i. e. dead) Sea. 4. Twelve years they had been subject to Chederlaomer, but revolted in the thirteenth; 5. So in the fourteenth, he, with his associate kings, came and smote the Rephaims of Ashteroth Carnaim, and the Zuzites of Ham, and the Emims of the vale of Kirjathaim; 6. And the Horites in their mountains of Seir, as far as the vale of Paran, which is by the wilderness. 7. They turned about and came to Enmishpat, which is now Kadesh, and ravaged all the low country of the Amalekites, and of the Amorites, who dwelt in Hazezon-tamer.

8. Now the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim, and Bela, which is now Zoar, went out, and fought in the vale of Siddim, 9. With Chederlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of tribes or nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Elasar, four kings with five. 10. Now the vale of Siddim had many bituminous pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fleeing, fell there, and the rest fled to the mountains: 11. So the overcomers took all the wealth and provisions of Sodom and Gomorrah away with them; 12. With Lot also, Abram's 'brother's son, who dwelt then in Sodom, with all his wealth; and he departed.

13. ¶ But one that escaped, told Abram the Hebrew, who then dwelt in the plain of Mamre, the Amorite, the brother of Eschol, and Aner, who were confederate with Abram; 14. Then Abram mustered three hundred and eighteen of his tried domestics, and pursued the enemy to the river Dan; 15. Where he, with his men, falling upon them in divisions by night, smote them, and pursued them as far as Hobah northward, of Damascus. 16. And he brought back all the wealth of Sodom and Gomorrah, and his own kinsman Lot, with his wealth; with the women also, and the people. 17. After his return from the defeat of Chederlaomer, and his associate kings, the king of Sodom went to meet
