the thousand years. 15. The general refurrection and laft judgment. 16. The punishment of the wicked at the day of judgment, when they will be burnt up like the tares in the earth which will then be a lake of fire. 17. The new heavens and earth which will be after the firft heavens and earth are paffed away. 18. The new Jerufalem where the faints will dwell forever after all the wicked are punished with the fecond death.

II. I now proceed to speak of the light or knowledge afforded us by the prophecies concerning thefe great and important things mentioned in the above eighteen particulars, of things to come.

"Bleffed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep thofe things that are written therein, for the time is at hand."

I. The first thing to be noticed is, The promises made to Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob, concerning the land of

Canaan.

The foundation of all the glorious things which are to take place concerning the kingdom of Chrift, the feed of Abraham, appears to be laid in the promifes made to Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob. On this account it is proper to begin here, by confidering the bounds of the land promifed to them and their pofterity.

This is the land called EMMANUEL'S, where he was born, where he preached, fuffered, died, rofe again, from which he afcended, and where he will return to reign a thousand years, when "all nations fhall call him blessed, and wars fhall ceafe to the ends of the earth." This is mentioned by Ifaiah, chap. viii. 8, " And he shall pass through Judah; he fhall overflow and go over; he fhall reach even to the neck; and the ftreatching out of his. wings fhall fill the breadth of thy land, O EMMANUEL"

The Lord promised this land to Abraham first, then to Ifaac, laft to Jacob. I here quote what was said to each of them.

1. TO ABRAHAM. Gen. xii. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, "Now the LORD had faid unto Abram, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's houfe, unto a land that I will fhew thee. And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will blefs thee, and make thy name great; and thou fhalt be a bleffing;` and I will blefs them that blefs thee, and curfe him that curfeth thee; and in thee fhall all families of the earth be bleffed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken to him, and lot went with him; and Abram was feventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his bro ther's fon, and all their fubftance that they had gathered, and the fouls they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. And Abram paffed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanites was then in the land. And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and faid, unto thy feed will I give this land; and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.”

Chap. xiii. 14, 15, 16, 17, “And the LORD faid unto Abram, after that Lot was feparated from him, lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward, and fouthward, and eastward, and weftward; for all the land which thou feeft, to thee will I give it, and to thy feed forever. And I will make thy feed as the duft of the earth; fo that if a man can number the duft of the earth, then fhall thy feed alfo be numbered. Arife, walk through the land, in the length of it, and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee."

Chap. xv. 5, 6, 7, 8, 18, "And he brought him forth abroad, and faid, look now towards heaven, and tell the ftars, if thou be able to number them; and he said unto him, fo fhall thy feed be; and he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out

of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. In that fame day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, faying, unto thy feed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt, unto the great river, the river Euphrates."

Chap. xvii. 8, "And I will give unto thee, and to thy feed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting poffeffion; and I will be their God."

Chap. xxii. 15, 16, 17, 18, "And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the fecond time, and faid, by myfelf have I fworn, faith the LORD; for because thou haft done this thing, and haft not withheld thy fon, thine only fon; that in blefling I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy feed as the ftars of the heaven, and as the fand which is upon the fea fhore; and thy feed fhall poffefs the gate of their enemies; and in thy feed fhall all the nations of the earth be bleffed; becaufe thou haft obeyed my voice.".

Here is what was promifed to Abraham concerning the land of Canaan. Can any perfon of common fenfe fuppofe that God fulfilled all promised to him while he lived a ftranger in that land, having no poffeffion at all, living a ftranger and a pilgrim? There is fomething greater than this for him; which will be given him when he fhall rife again with the other faints and reign there with Chrift a thousand years.

2. We will notice what was promised to ISAAC.

Genefis xxvi. 2, 3, 4, 5, " And the LORD appeared unto him, and faid, go not down unto Egypt; dwell in the land which I fhall tell thee of. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will blefs thee, for unto thee, and unto thy feed, will give all thefe countries; and I will perform the oath which I fware unto Abraham, thy father and I will make thy feed to multiply as the ftars of heaven, and I will give unto thy feed all these countries, and in thy feed fhall all the nations of the earth be bleffed; because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my ftatutes, and my laws."

3. Laftly, let us fee what was faid to JACOB concerning the promifed land.

Gen. xxviii. 13, 14, 15, "And behold the Lord stood above it, and faid, I am the God of Abraham thy father, and the father of Ifaac; the land whereon thou lieft, to thee will I give it, and to thy feed. And thy feed fhall be as the dust of the earth; and thou fhalt spread abroad to the weft, and to the eaft, and to the north, and to the fouth; and in thee, and in thy feed, fhall all the families of the earth be bleffed. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goeft, and will bring thee again into this land, for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of."

Chap. xxxv. 10, 11, 12, "And God faid unto him, thy name is Jacob; thy name fhall not be called any more Jacob; but Ifrael fhall be thy name; and he called his name Ifrael. And God faid unto him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful, and multiply; a nation and a company of nations fhall be of thee, and kings fhall come out of thy loins: and the la nd which I gave Abraham, and Ifaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy feed after thee will I give it."

Chap. xlviii, 3, 4, "And Jacob faid unto Jofeph, God almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan and bleffed me, and faid unto me, behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy feed after thee, for an everlafting poffeffion."

Thefe promifes made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were mentioned again by the fame God, to Mofes, in Exodus vi. 2, 3, 4, 5, “And God spake unto Mofes, and faid unto him, I am the Lord; and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Ifaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty; but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. And I have alfo eftablished my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were ftrangers. And I have alfo heard the groaning of the children of Ifrael, whom the Egyptians kept in bondage; and I

Have remembered my covenant. And I will bring you into the land, concerning which I did fwear to give it to Abraham, to Ifaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage; I am the Lord.”

Having quoted what was faid to Abraham, Ifaac, Jacob and Mofes concerning what is faid of the land, called EMMANUEL's, where he is to reign when the patriarchs come into poffeffion of it, I fhall add a few words.

When God had called Abraham out of his own country, he obtained the promise of the land of Canaan, and that his feed fhould be numerous, and that God would be his. After he had proved himself faithful in the last trial of offering up his fon, God then confirmed all his promises to Abraham by an oath, and "because he would fwear by no greater, he fware by himself, faying, furely, in bleffing I will blefs thee; and in multiplying I will multiply thee. And fo, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promife." Heb. vi. 13, 14, 15

These fame bleffings refpecting the land, a numerous feed, and that the Lord fhould be his, were promised to Ifaac, and Jacob, who obeyed after the example of Abraham; so that the fame covenant was confirmed to them, and will stand until it is completely fulfilled in every word, as the Lord has promifed, according to the words of David, in Pfalm cv. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, "He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations: which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Ifaac; and confirmed the fame unto Jacob for a law, and to Ifrael for an everlafting covenant; faying, unto thee will I give the land of Canaan the lot of your inheritance ; when they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and ftrangers in it."

Many people think that the covenant made with Abraham contained only temporal bleffings; we might as well fay the everlafting Gofpel contains only témporal bleffings. The land of Canaan for an everlasting poffeffion does not look as though it was temporary, or for a little while. That the Lord would be their God forever, does not appear temporary. There is no per
