ry idle word that men shall speak, they shall give an ac. count thereof at the day of judgment. 2 Peter ii. 9, ~ The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of JUDGMENT to be punished. John iv. 17, “ Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldnefs in the day of JUDGMENT ; because as he is, so are we in this world."

These places of scripture are so many united testimonies, proving that there will hereafter be a day of judge ment. - Those who fpake of this day were infallible wit. nesses, all uniting to declare the truth of that folemn day.

Where is the wretch so bold as to declare that David, Solomon, Daniel, and others, were not men of truth? Who will say that Jesus Christ, and the apostles were a company of liars ? Woe to him who makes God a liar, by rejecting the testimony of his Son!

This day spoken of in the scriptures of truth, is not left as a piece of history to be believed or not ; the truth of it is brought home to every man's conscience by the holy ghost; and men cannot get rid of the evidence giv. en them by the spirit of truth. Christ says, John xvi. 8, speaking of the holy ghost; “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, of righteousness, and of JUDGMENT.

To reprove, is to charge a person with a fault which he knows he is guilty of. The spirit reproves the whole world. The reason why they are reproved is, because they are enlightened. Paul says, Eph. v. 13, “But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light; for whatsoever doth make manifest is light." Chrift says, John viii. 12, “ I am the light of the world.” John says, speaking of Christ, John i. 9, “ That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” This verse shews why it is that all men are reproved of a JUDGMENT; it is because they are assured of a judgment to come.. This is plain from what Paul told the Athenians ; Acts xvii. 31, “ Because he hath ap

pointed a day in the which he will judge the world in · righteousness, by that Man, whom he hath ordained ; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”

Paul declares that God has given assurance unto all men, of the day of JUDGMENT. This is mentioned by Paul. Rom. i. 19,“ Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them, for God hath shewed it unto them.” 1

This manifestation Felix had when Paul preached before him. Acts xxiv. 25, “And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and JUDGMENT to come, Felix trembled and answered, go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.” When Paul reasoned of this JUDGMENT to come, there was such an evidence in the mind of Felix, that what he said was true, that he trembled, while thinking of the awful day before him. The fact is, the holy ghost brought the evidence of that day home to his soul in such a manner, that the only thing left him was, to send Paul away that he might not hear any more of that truth so troublesome to the wicked ; “God will bring every work into JUDGMENT with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." as 'I do not think that every person knows so much as to fay, there will be a day of judgment; (unless he has read it in the scriptures) but all nations are so far en. Jightened as to know that they are finners, and that as finners they must be pardoned or punished ; in this way all men are assured of the judgment to conre. Though all men are enlightened ; yet it is not to that degree as to comprehend every thing which they have some knowl. edge of. John says, chap. i. 5," And the light shineth'. in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.” on When Paul reasoned of JUDGMENT, it was of that which is recorded in the scriptures. The reason of this JUDGMENT will appear in the following manner ; Does God govern the world ? Certainly, he who made theworld governs it. Is God a righteous governor? He furely is. What is the character of a righteous govern. or? He rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked. Are the righteous rewarded and the wicked punished in

this world? They are not. If God the righteous gov. ernor, rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked; and the righteous are not rewarded, nor the wicked puna ished in this world, how does it appear that God is righteous? There is no way to prove it but this, (viz. ;) that there will be a day when God will reward the righteous, and punish the wicked; this brings us to see the mean. ing of the scriptures which says, “ The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to re.' serve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.”

2. Having proved from the scriptures that there will be a future judgment, I now proceed to speak of the judge who will decide every thing brought before him, when ail nations are gathered before him. Jesus Christ is now appointed the judge to act at that great and fola emn day. How suitable is he for such a work! Hav. ing suffered on earth, died on earth, and having reigned in righteousness on the earth one thousand years, and in righteousness having made war and overcome his foes ; it is altogether wise that he should be the judge of the quick and the dead.'

The scriptures in several places, mention Christ as the judge. Acts x. 42, 5 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was or.. dained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.” 2 Tim. iv. 8, “ Henceforth there is laid up for me at' crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge, shall give me at that day." These two verses 1peak of Christ as the judge of quick and dead, and the righteous judge. Many places declare that he will judge the world. Pfalm xcvi. 13, “ For he cometh to JUDGE the earth; he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.” Acts xvii. 31, “ Be. cause he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath -ordained ; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” Rom. ii. 16, “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.” 2 Tim.

iv. 1, “ I charge thee, therefore, before God, and the - Lord Jesus, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing, and kingdom.” i Pet. iv. 5, “ Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead."

How plain and folemn are these declarations concern. ing the Lord Jesus as the judge, who in that day will judge every man according to his works !

3. The scriptures mention the judgment feat of Christ, where he will set to judge the world when all nations are gathered before him. In many parts of the world the judgment seat where men set to judge, were very splendid. Here the judge not only displayed liis judgment; but his power to judge. Christ's judgment feat is mentioned, Rom. xiv. 10, “But why dost thou judge thy brother? Or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? For we shall all stand before the JUDGMENT' SEAT of Chrift.” 2 Cor. v. 5, “ For we must all appear before the JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHR13T."

'It appears to me that this judgment feat will be a CLOUD in the air. When Christ comes to reign on the earth a thousand years, he will first appear on a cloud, and be seen over Terusalem. And when he shall judge in the world at the last day, it will be in the air.

I think that Christ will be on the earth after the thousand years, until the last judgment, and that at the judgment he will rise into the air, and there call all nations before him. Whether it will be fo or not, it is certain that he will be on a cloud to judge the world. It is said, Rev. xiv. 14," And I look. ed, and beheld a white CLOUD, and upon the cloud fat one like the Son of man, having or his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp fickle.” This Son of man fat on a cloud in harvest time; "the harvest is the end of the world." Christ says, Matth. xxvi. 64,“ Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man coming in the CLOUDS of heaven, with power and great glory.”

Having proved the judgment to come, described the Judge, and his judgment feat, I now proceed;

2. To speak of the resurrection of all the dead, and what they will be raised for.-All who are raised when . Chrif comes to reign on the earth, will live forever, and all who are changed at his second coming, will be in the fame situation, equal to the angels. These share in the first resurrection.

At the day of judgment, there will be many faints in their graves, who lived and died in the thousand years of Christ's reign upon earth, for though those who obey the Saviour, will live long under his reign, yet they will live mortal, and many will die, and many will be alive at the judgment day, who will be changed, but at the last day all in their graves will be raised, and all the righteous will be changed. This is plain from Rev. xx. 12, 13, 6 And I saw the dead small and great, stand be. fore God. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them, and they were judged every man according to their works." These verses prove that not only all in their graves will be raised, but that hell will give up the dead which are in it. This appears to me a general gathering of men and devils.

Jesus Christ has given us a folemn account of this general resurrection of all that are in their graves at the last day. John.v, 28, 29, “ Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in their graves Thall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life ; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." Thefe verses prove that all in their graves and in the sea, will be called before the judge.

In another place Christ has told us, that all nations will be gathered before him ; and it appears from what he has said, that they will be gathered in a promiscuous assembly, before the judge in the air, where Christ and those faints are who had part in the first resurrection. After they are gathered before the judgment feat, the judge will separate the righteous from the wicked, and the whole of Adam's family will appear in two companies; one on the right hand of the judge, and the
