It is declared that the Gentiles who carried them away captive among all nations, fhall affift them in returning, and shall even bring their fons in their arms, and the daughters of the Jews upon their fhoulders, verfe 22.

4. This prophecy fays that even the Gentile kings and queens, who have been the moft cruel to the Jews, fhall act the part of nurses, being tender of them, and fhall help them in their growth as a rifing nation. "The prefent Emperor of France and King of Italy has of late manifefted fomething of this difpofition towards the Jews of Paris; & the Jewish Sanhedrim have acknowledged that his treatment to them is different from what they have received from other kings, for more than feventeen hundred years paft, verfe 23. Who could think of fpiritual. izing this text to us to apply it to the believing Gentiles? This is one thing contained in the new covenant.

This fame fubject is mentioned in chap. liv. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, "Sing, O barren, thou that didit not bear; break forth into finging, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travel with child; for more are the children of the defolate than the children of the married wife, faith the LORD. Enlarge the place of thy tent and let them ftretch forth the curtains of thine hab. itations; fpare not, lengthen thy cord, and strengthen thy ftakes; for thou fhalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy feed fhall inherit the Gentiles, and make the defolate cities to be inhabited. Fear not, for thou shalt not be ashamed; neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to fhame; for thou fhalt forget the fhame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. For thy Maker is thine husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the holy one of Ifrael, the God of the whole earth fhall he be called.

For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forfaken and grieved in fpirit, and a wife of youth, when thou waft: refused, faith thy God. For a small moment have I forfaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee;' in a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee,

faith the Lord thy Redeemer : for this is as the waters of Noah unto me; for as I have fworn that the waters of Noah fhall no more go over the earth, fo have I fworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee; for the mountains fhall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, faith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.

O thou afflicted, toffed with tempefts, and not comforted! behold, I will lay thy ftones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with Sapphires; and I will make thy windows of Agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and thy borders of pleasant stones; and all thy children fhall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness fhalt thou be established ; thou shalt be far from oppreffion; for thou shalt not fear; and from terror, for it fhall not come upon thee."

Here are feveral glorious things all contained in the new covenant, not yet accomplished. 1.The Jews are confidered as barren, and defolate, being diverfed, for the LORD has put them away, and faid I am not thy husband. Notwithstanding this, in the latter days it is mentioned that they fhall be more numerous than when they formerly lived in the promised land, verfe 1, 2, 3.

2. It is mentioned that their honor fhall be fo great, that all their former reproach fhall be wiped away forev

er.

3. This new covenant in which these things are to be enjoyed, are as certain as the promises in the covenant made with Noah. There God promised that the waters fhould no more go over the earth; and they never have ; fo fays he I will be wroth with thee no more; and though mountains may depart; yet this covenant of peace fhall not be removed, verfe 9, 10.

4. It is mentioned that though the Jews are in an afflicted, and uncomfortable state at prefent, yet it is promised that they fhall yet be fettled on a firm foundation.

5. The very thing which is mentioned in Hebrews 8, is mentioned here, there it is faid no one fhall fay know the LORD, for all fhall know him from the leaft to the great

eft, here it is faid "All thy children fhall be taught of the Lord, and great fhall be the peace of thy children." Certainly these glorious things have never yet taken place in any nation; but they will when the Jews return to their own land.

The return of the Jews to their land according to the promise in the new covenant, is described in an engaging manner in chap. lx. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, "Arife, fhine, for thy light is come and the glory of the LORD is rifen upon thee; for behold,darkness shall cover the earth, and grofs darkness the people; but the LORD fhall arise upon thee, and his glory fhall be feen upon thee; and the Gentiles fhall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rifing. Lift up thine eyes round about, and fee; all they gather themselves together, they come to thee; thy fons fhall come from far, and thy daughters fhall be nurfed at thy fide. Then fhalt thou fee, and flow together and thine heart fhall fear and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea fhall be converted unto thee, and the forces of the Gentiles fhall come unto thee. The multitude of camels fhall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba fhall come; they fhall bring gold and incenfe, and they fhall fhew forth the praifes of the Lord.

All the flocks of Kedar fhall be gathered together unto thee; the Rams of Nebaioth fhall minifter unto thee; they fhall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the houfe of my glory.

Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows? Surely the ifles fhall wait for me,and the ships of Tarshish first,to bring thy fons from far, their filver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the holy one of Ifrael, bacause he hath glorified thee. And the fons of strangers fhall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee; for in my wrath I fmote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee. Therefore thy gates fhall be open continually; they fhall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings

may be brought; for the nation and kingdom that will nott ferve thee fhall perish; yea thofe nations fhall be utterly wafted,

The glory of Lebanon fhall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my fanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious. The fons alfo of them that afflicted thee fhall come bending unto thee; and all they that defpifed thee fhall bow themselves down at the foles of thy feet; and they fhall call thee, the city of the LORD, the Zion of the holy one of Ifrael.

Whereas thou haft been forfaken and hated fo that no man went thro' thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations. Thou fhalt alfo fuck the milk of the Gentiles, and fhalt fuck the breast of kings; and thou fhalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob. For brafs I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring filver, and for wood brafs, and for stones iron; I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteoufnefs. Violence fhall no more be heard in thy land, wafting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou fhalt call thy. walls falvation, and thy gates praife.

The fun fhall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness fhall the moon give light unto thee; but the LORD fhall be unto thee an everlafting light, and thy Go thy glory. Thy fun fhall no more go down, neith-er fhall thy moon withdraw itself; for the LORD fhall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning fhall be ended. Thy people alfo fhall be all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands; that I may be glorified. A little one fhall become a thousand, and a small one a ftrong nation; I the LORD will haften it in his time.”

There are feveral things in this chapter which can ne-ver be accomplished, unless the Jews return and dwell in their own land. The Jews are here particularly mentioned in distinction from the Gentiles, for all nations be-fides the Jews are called Gentiles, and they are here named, which fhews that this chapter has not reference to

believers in general; but to the pofterity of Jacob in par

ticular.

The Gentiles are mentioned four times. Gentiles fhall come to thy light," verfe 3.

men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles," verfe II. "Thou fhall alfo fuck the milk of the Gentiles," verfe 16. All thefe places fhew that the glory mentioned here, belongs to the Jews.

A few remarks on this chapter must suffice.

1. At the time when the Jews fhall return to their land, it is mentioned that the nations of the earth will be in a diftreffed, dark fituation, and that the Jews fhall have profperity, which will caufe the Gentiles to come to the Jews and their profperity, verfe 2, 3.

2. It is mentioned that the Gentiles will affift the Jews in returning to their land, verfe 4.

That when they return, the wealth of the nations will be gathered to that land, even the riches which confifts in Camels, Dromedaries, Sheep, Incenfe, Gold, Silver, &c. and that even the fhips of Tarfhifh fhall come to bring the Jews with their riches, from the diftant parts. where they are now scattered, verfe 6, 7, 8, 9.

4. It is faid that the other nations fhall come to help in building the walls of their cities, verfe 10.

5. We are told that there fhall be fo much riches brought from different parts, that the gates of their cities will be kept open night and day; and that other nations. fhall ferve them, and those who do not fhall perish, verfe 11, 1.2.

6. It is faid that the pofterity of those who have afAlicted them, fhall come and fubmit to them, and that they fhall be honored in proportion as they have been despised, verse 14, 15.

7. Peace is promifed them without interruption, that they shall be an eternal excellency, and that God will be their conftant light, and they a righteous people under the reign of Chrift their king, verfe 18, 19, 21.—All these things will take place when God makes the new covenant with the house of Ifrael and the house of Judah ; not before.
