REPORT.

THE COUNCIL OF MILITARY EDUCATION have the honor to submit to His Royal Highness the General Commanding-in-chief the following Report of the Open Competitive Examination for Admission to the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, which was held between the 7th and 24th January, 1861.

The Conditions of the Examination were stated in the following Prospectuses, previously issued for the information of Candidates.

NOTICE.

Horse Guards, 26th November, 1860.

THE Competitive Examinations hitherto held of Candidates for the Artillery and Engineer Services of the Indian Army will cease, and all Candidates for the Artillery and Engineer Services generally will, in future, have to go through a course of instruction at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.

The next Competitive Examination, in conformity with the annexed Regulations, will commence on the 7th January 1861. The number of Vacancies to be competed for is 70.

Applications of Candidates, as required by Article VIII. of the Regulations, will in this instance be received until the 20th December next.

The successful Candidates will be admitted in the first instance to the Royal Military College, Addiscombe, and eventually transferred to the Royal Military Academy, Wool

wich.

As in the prospectus formerly issued for admission to Addiscombe College, it was provided that Candidates might be examined in the use of Astronomical and Surveying Instruments, there will be an Examination in that subject for such as desire to take it up, in January next; after which date, however, it will not be included among the subjects of Examination for admission to Woolwich. 750 marks will be allotted to this subject, as heretofore.

REGULATIONS for the Admission of Gentlemen Cadets to the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.

N.B.-All Candidates for Commissions in the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers are required to go through a course of instruction at the Royal Military Academy.

I. Competitive Examinations for admission will be held in London twice a-year, in January and July. They are conducted by Examiners appointed for the purpose, in the presence and under the superintendence of the Council of Military Education.

The Candidates must, until the Examination in July 1861, be between 16 and 20 years of age; after that date between 16 and 19 years of age.

II. The admissions will be determined by the result of a competitive examination, the subjects of which will be as follows, viz. :

III. No Candidate will be allowed to be examined in more than five subjects, of which one must be Mathematics, and no one who does not obtain at least 1000 marks in Mathematics, of which 700 at least must be in Pure Mathematics, will be eligible for an appointment.*

From the other subjects of examination each Candidate may select any, not exceeding four in number, in which he desires to be examined; but no one will be allowed to count the marks gained in any such subject, unless those marks shall at least amount to one-sixth of the total number of marks allotted to that subject, or section of a subject.

In English and Hindustani, it will be understood that by gaining one-sixth of the marks allotted to Language, Literature, and Composition, a Candidate will be entitled to count in the first section of the subject; and in like manner by obtaining one-sixth of the marks allotted to History and Geography he will be entitled to count in the second; but no amount of marks gained in one section will entitle him to count those gained in the other if below the prescribed minimum.

In Classics, the same rule applies as regards counting on one or other of its two sections (Latin and Greek), as has been explained in reference to the two sections of English; but, in
