"We have read these Lectures with a great deal of pleasure-we are glad that a second edition has so soon been called for, and hope that a third and fourth may soon follow. But to say we like the Book extremely well is hardly sufficient. We must give our reasons. We like the Lectures because they are addressed exclusively to a very numerous and most interesting class of persons-the young men of a free and enlightened community.-We like these Lectures, because they are timely, as well as appropriate. We like these Lectures, because they are written in a plain, manly, and business like style-because they are replete with such instruction, arguments and motives, as should be addressed to every young man in the nation." "Mr. Hawes has, in this attempt, contributed a most valuable addition to the stock of means adapted to the moral improvement and elevation of the character of the rising generation. The general style of execution evinces the workings of a mind well acquainted with the subject in hand, and a benevolence of spirit calculated to appeal with effect to the youthful heart :-there is throughout a manly business like exhibition of truth and counsel. The lan-guage is perspicuous, pithy, chaste and natural. Among the qualities of character which Mr. H. enumerates and warmly recommends, he includes public spirit-a spirit, which the signs of the present day imperiously demand in every one, who would be regarded as a friend to human society. We cannot forbear very earnestly to recommend this volume to the perusal of every young man in the country-we should rejoice to see it stereotyped and distributed by thousands."
