It is treafon to fay the fame of Beau ty, whatever we do of the arts and ornaments with which Pride is wont to fet it off the weakest minds are moft caught with both; being ever glad to win attention and credit from fmall and flender accidents, thro' difability of purchafing them by better means. of the face fpeaks out the modefty and humility of the mind, and the juftness of the proportion raifes our thoughts up to the art and wifdom of the great Creator,-fomething may be allowed it, and fomething to the embellifhments which fet it off; and yet, when the whole apology is read, it will be found at laft, that Beauty, like Truth, never is fo glorious as when it goes the plaineft.

Simplicity is the great friend to nature, and if I would be proud of any thing in this filly world, it fhould be of this honeft alliance,

Confider what has been faid; and may the God of all mercies and kind

ness watch over your paffions, and inspire you with all humbleness of mind, meeknefs, patience, and long fuffering.

Humility.

MATTHEW XI. 29.

· Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your fouls.

HE great business of man, is the regulation of his fpirit; the poffeffion of fuch a frame and temper of mind, as will lead us peaceably through this world, and in the many weary stages of it, afford us, what we shall be sure to stand in need of, Reft unto our fouls.

all we want the end of all our wishes

and purfuits: give us a profpect of this, we take the wings of the morning, and fly to the uttermoft parts of the earth to have it in poffeffion: we feek for it in titles, in riches and pleafures, climb up after it by ambition,

come down again and stoop for it by avarice, try all extremes; ftill we are gone out of the way, nor is it, till after many miferable experiments, that we are convinced at laft, we have been feeking every where for it, but where there was a profpect of finding it; and that is, within ourfelves, in a meek and lowly difpofition of heart. This, and this only, will give us reft unto our souls: -reft, from those turbulent and haughty paffions which difturb our quiet:
