He who seriously and dispassionately searches the scriptures, must confess that they teach, in explicit terms, that God rules over all-that man is fallen from his primeval rectitude that the Messiah shed his blood for his restoration-and that in a future state rewards await the righteous, and punishments will be inflicted on the wicked.

To the word of God, therefore let us have continual recourse, and thence derive the doctrine which is according to godliness, pure as the light of heaven, and refreshing as the dew of the morning!

The gospel of Jesus Christ, justly understood and cordially believed, enlightens the mind-calms the troubled conscience-rectifies depraved propensities-and introduces us into the habitation of the spirits of just men made perfect.

THE EXISTENCE AND ATTRIBUTES

OF GOD.

GOD.is

OD is incomprehensible in his nature, infinite in his essence and perfections, and independent in his operations; he hath given being to the whole frame of sensible and intelligent creatures, and governs them by inconceivable wisdom; he fills the heavens with the glory of his majesty! and the earth with the influences of his goodness.

The whole world is like a looking glass, which whole and entire represents the image of God; and every broken piece of it, discovers some ray of its divine original.

The heavens which he "stretches out like a curtain" proclaim his majesty: his being is visible in their existence, his wisdom in their

frame, his power in their motion, his goodness in their usefulness; they have a voice, and their voice is as intelligible as any common language.

God is a pure spirit, to which nothing can be added, from which nothing can be taken.

In him there is light and no darkness," spirituality without any matter; perfection without any shadow or taint of imperfection. Light pierceth into all things, preserves its own purity, and admits of no mixture of any thing else with it.

As the essence of God cannot be bounded by any place, so it is not to be limited by any time; as it is his immensity to be every where, so it is his eternity to be always.

ON RELIGION.

ODLINESS consists, not so much in a well digested system of right notions, as in holy and spiritual affections, influencing and regulating the whole deportment of the man.

Men are saved by a cost which angels cannot count, and in a manner which fills all heaven with amazement.

God's giving his Son for us, and his Spirit to us, is the quintessence of the gospel, the soul of christianity.

Ministers should live to the same end for which Christ died, namely to bring men to God.

Grace is a divine lamp in the soul, which lives and burns by the spirit's feeding.

When the knowledge of God enlightens, it is the image of God in the mind; when it enlivens, it is the image of God in the heart; when it reforms and regulates the conduct, it is the same image in the life.

'There are three great mysteries which deserve our admiration and our praise. God revealed in the flesh, God revealed in the word, and God revealed in the soul.

It will cost something to be religious. It will cost more not to be so.

He who begins religion where it should end, will end religion where it should be begun.

It is not high professions, but holy lives, which characterize and demonstrate true christians.
