The two hundred and eighty-nine ancient churches. represent a variety of fifty-eight different known dedications, and forty-eight of the churches are dedicated in honour of the Virgin Mary.

H

Beyond the original intention, the practice of church dedication has pleasantly conserved many historical associations. The hagiographer revels in the ecclesiastical records which dedications have handed down to us. To the antiquary they open out an avenue for research, and it must be useful as well as interesting from time to time to turn up the mould of such rich quaint memories.
