THE MEN WHO MAKE THE EAGLE. As there is a not inexcusable curiosity on the part of the public to know something of the men who, behind the vail of impersonality, do the thinking and the writing, and the work of administration that result in the production of their favorite newspaper, the EAGLE has given to the ALMANAC portraits of its chief writers, correspondents, heads of departments and business authorities. It is not proposed here to present biographies of these gentlemen, or even to describe their duties in detail, for it is the policy of the EAGLE to merge the individuality of its servants in their work. What it is proper for the community to know of these men of affairs, experienced foremen and industrious journalists, is that they, taken as a whole, represent the forces that give form and character to the EAGLE, and are to be judged by the outcome of their exertions. It is not, however, improper to say that the youngest of them has, so to speak, worn the uniform of the EAGLE office for nearly a decade, and that the oldest of the number finds it difficult to recall the time when he was identified with any other establishment. The EAGLE is in nothing more conservative than in its treatment of its working force of all ranks. By the exercise of care in recruiting its staff few things are rarer in its experience than the necessity of discharging any member. Out of this policy several advantages have come, not the least of which is the preservation of a well marked character from year to year, and the maintenance of an intimate acquaintance between its representatives and the people of Brooklyn. In point of nationality these gentlemen whose portraits we present, are numbered as follows: Americans, 10; English, 5; Irish, 2; Scotch 2; native of Ceylon, 1. Two of them are bachelors and three widowers. Three of the remainder have found consolation for the loss of their first wives in a second marriage, and twelve are the heads of unbroken families. Considered from a domestic point of view, therefore, it will be seen that the men who make the EAGLE are by no means inexperienced. There are a variety of other matters that might be mentioned for the gratification of curiosity, but as a statement of them would involve an invasion of the privacy which the EAGLE is scrupulous to defend, silence is preserved. It is perhaps worth while adding that except as to the gentlemen immediately responsible for the policy of the EAGLE, no question of personal politics is ever raised in the office, and in no event has the question of religious belief ever been raised. At what altar he shall kneel and how he shall vote are subjects which every EAGLE man, from the chief to the humblest subordinate, decides for himself. To this body of information it must be added that in the last analysis every EAGLE man (occasional contributors excepted) will be found to be a thoroughgoing Brooklynite. No matter what his place of birth, or where he came from last, the laborer in the EAGLE vineyard must become a son of the soil by adoption. It is, of course, unnecessary to qualify what has here been said of the men who make the EAGLE by saying that the persons here presented have behind them a great army of competent, faithful and experienced assistants, who put part of their lives into the paper every day, and without whose loyal co-operation no such product as the people of Brooklyn are familiar with could be turned out. |
