ARIA.

Ab, parlate che forse tacendo
Men pietoso, più barbari siete.
Ah! v'intendo-tacete!

Non mi dite che il figlio morì
So che spira quell'ostia si cara,
Veggo il sangue che tinge quell' ara,
Sento ill ferro che il sen lo ferrì!

CHORUS.-HAYDN.

Introduced into the Oratorio of Judah.

The arm of the Lord is upon them,
By the edge of the sword they fell,
And the rolling thunder He cast on all
Man against man He set them,

None can escape His fury;

;

The sword of the Lord devoureth them all.

The Lord, he will have mercy ;

In peace He keepeth Zion.

RECITATIVE, AIR, AND CHORUS.-Samson. HANDEL.

RECITATIVE.

Mr. BRAHAM.

O loss of sight! of thee I most complain :
O worse than beggary, old age, or chains
My very soul in real darkness dwells.

AIR.

Total eclipse! no sun, no moon!
All dark, amidst the blaze of noon?
O glorious light! no cheering ray
To glad my eyes with welcome day;
Why thus depriv'd thy prime decree?
Sun, moon and stars are dark to me.

CHORUS.

first created beam! and thou great Word!
Let there be Light! and light was over all :
One heav'nly blaze shone round this earthly ball;
To thy dark servant life, by light, afford.

SOLO, AND CHORUS.-HANDEL.
Miss STEPHENS.

As from the power of sacred lays,
The spheres began to move,
And sung the great Creator's praise
To all the bless'd above;

So when the last and dreadful hour,
This crumbling pageant shall devour,
The trumpet shall be heard on high-
CHORUS.

The dead shall live, the living die,
And music shall untune the sky.

END OF THE SECOND PART.

An interval of Five Minutes between the Second and Third Parts.

PART III.

CHORUS.-Solomon.-HANDEL,

From the censer curling rise,

Grateful incense to the skies;
Heaven blesses David's throne,

Happy, happy, Solomon.

26

DOUBLE CHORUS.

Live, live for ever, pious David's son:
Live, live for ever, mighty Solomon.

SONG.-CIANCHETTINI.

Madame CATALANI.

Domine, labia mea aperies,

Et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam.

DOUBLE CHORUS.-Solomon.-HANDEL.

Your harps and cymbals sound

To great JEHOVAH'S praise,
Unto the Lord of Hosts

Your willing voices raise.

SONG.-Micah.-HANDEL.

Miss STEPHENS.

RECITATIVE.

Relieve thy champion, image of thy strength;
Ánd turn his labours to a peaceful end.

AIR.

Return O God of Hosts! return!
Behold thy servant in distress.

DOUBLE CHORUS.-Solomon.-HANDEL.

Praise the Lord with harp and tongue,
Praise him all ye old and young;

He's in mercy ever strong;

Praise the Lord through every state,
Praise the Lord through every land,
Praise Him early, praise Him late,
God alone is good and great.

Let the loud Hosannahs rise,
Widely spreading through the skies,

God alone is just and wise.

SONG.-Triumph of time and truth.-HANDEL.
Mr. BRAHAM.

Pleasure, my former ways resigning
To Virtue's cause inclining,

Thee, Pleasure, now I leave ;
Lest when my spirits fail me,
Repentance can't avail me,
Nor sickness comfort give.

DOUBLE CHORUS.-Gloria Patri,-LEO.

(Taken from the Fitzwilliam Music,)

Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

TRIO.- Creation.-HAYDN.

Mr. W. KNYVETT, Mr. VAUGHAN, and

Mr. PHILLIPS.

On Thee cach living soul awaits,

From Thee, O Lord, they beg their meat;

Thou openest thy hand,

And sated all they are.

But when from them thy face is hid,

With sudden terror they are struck;

Thou takest their breath away;

They vanish into dust,

28

Thou lettest thy breath go forth again,
And life with vigour fresh returns ;
Revived earth unfolds

New force and new delights.

DOUBLE CHORUS.-Israel in Egypt.-HANDEL. The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

RECITATIVE.

Mr. BRAHAM.

For the host of Pharaoh went in with his chariots, and with his horsemen, into the sea. And the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them, but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.

CHORUS.

The Lord shall reign för ever and ever.

RECITATIVE.

Mr. BRAHAM.

And Miriam the Prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances: and Miriam answered them :

AIR.

Sing ye unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously; The horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.

CHORUS.

The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

GRAND Double chORUS.

I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously: The horse and His rider hath he thrown into the sea.
