PREFACE.

THE following verses were written at different times, and after long intervals. When the idea first occurred to me of collecting some of them for the amusement of my own little children, I selected the simplest, and had them printed for private circulation. Yielding to the wishes of my friends, I have added to the little work some longer pieces, which I hope may be more acceptable to children of a larger growth.
