VARIOUS SUBJECTS AND OCCASIONS.
A BRIEF APPENDIX,
THE MODERN PHILOSOPHY OF UNBELIEF.
REV. JAMES SHERGOLD BOONE, M.A.,
INCUMBENT OF ST JOHN'S, PADDINGTON.
HE circumstances which have induced a clergyTHE
man to publish a Volume of Sermons, and the reasons which have made him select some that he has preached in preference to others, are matters which can have so little interest for the general reader, that they need not be mentioned. The Author, however, wishes to state, that he had intended to introduce some particular Discourses, the publication of which had been kindly requested, from time to time, by various members of a congregation to which he is very deeply indebted; but that he has been compelled to omit them; since he found, as the printing went on, that their insertion would swell the Volume to an inconvenient size.
He believes, however, that the title-page is still applicable; while, in the Sermons now chosen, he has endeavoured to preserve, for the most part, a certain degree of continuity and connexion, without attempting any regular or formal series:
There are some consecutive Discourses on the Nature of the Godhead; but these Discourses have no pretension whatever to constitute a set treatise on this all-important subject. The writer aspires at most to form a kind of supplement to such treatises, by discussing a few points, which do not seem to have been brought out in them so fully as the rest.
