The building was begun in April, 1908, by Oscar Hammerstein under a
large guarantee furnished by leading Philadelphia citizens and it was completed
in a remarkably short period of time, being opened on November 17, 1908,
under the management of Oscar Hammerstein and in connection with his Man-
hattan Grand Opera House in New York. The seating capacity is about 2,500,
with the usual arrangement of orchestra chairs and boxes for the subscribers.

The Philadelphia Opera House is now under the management of a local
organization, but is conducted in close affiliation with the Metropolitan Company
of New York.
