lacrymárum, in loco quem steps, in the vale of tears, in the posuit. place which he hath set.

Amen.

For the lawgiver shall give his blessing; they shall go from strength to strength: the God of gods shall be seen in Sion.

O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer give ear, O God of Jacob.

Behold, O God our defender : and look on the face of thine annointed.

For one day in thy courts: is better than a thousand.

I had rather be a despised one in the house of my God: than to dwell in the tents of the ungodly.

For God loveth mercy and truth: the Lord will give grace and glory.

He shall not withhold good things from them that walk in innocence: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

If thou, O Lord, shalt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall abide it?

For with thee there is propitiation: and because of thy law I have waited for thee, O Lord.

My soul hath waited on his word: my soul hath hoped in the Lord.

From the morning watch even until night: let Israel hope in the Lord.

For with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is plenteous redemption.

And he shall redeem Israel: from all his iniquities.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

LAUDAMUS.

We praise thee, O God: we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.

All the earth doth worship thee the Father everlasting.

To thee all angels cry aloud: the heavens and all the powers therein;

To thee cherubim and seraphim: continually do cry;

Holy, holy, holy: Lord God of Sabaoth.

Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory.

Thee, the glorious choir of the Apostles,

Thee, the goodly company of the Prophets,

Thee, the white-robed army of Martyrs, doth praise.

Thee, the holy Church throughout all the world: doth acknowledge.

Tu Rex gloriæ Christe.

Tu Patris sempiternus es Filius.

Tu, ad liberandum suscepturus hominem, non horruisti Virginis uterum.

Tu devicto mortis aculeo: aperuisti credentibus regna cœlorum.

Tu ad dexteram Dei sedes, in gloria Patris.

Judex crederis esse venturus.

Contristatam, et dolentem, Pertransivit gladius.

O quam tristis, et afflicta
Fuit illa benedicta
Mater Unigeniti !
Quæ mœrebat, et dolebat,
Pia Mater, dum videbat
Nati pœnas inclyti.

Quis est homo, qui non fleret,
Matrem Christi si videret

In tanto supplicio?
Quis non posset contristari,
Christi Matrem contemplari
Dolentem cum Filio?

Pro peccatis suæ gentis,
Vidit Jesum in tormentis,
Et flagellis subditum.
Vidit suum dulcem natum
Moriendo, desolatum,
Dum emisit spiritum.
Eia Mater fons amoris,
Me sentire vim doloris

Fac, ut tecum lugeam.
Fac, ut ardeat cor meum
In amando Christum Deum,
Ut sibi complaceam.

Sancta Mater, istud agas,
Crucifixi fige plagas

Cordi meo valide.
Tui Nati vulnerati,
Tam dignati pro me pati,

Pœnas mecum divide.

Fac me tecum pie flere,
Crucifixo condolere,
Donec ego vixero.
Juxta crucem tecum stare,
Et me tibi sociare,

In planctu desidero.

Virgo virginum præclara, Mihi jam non sis amara, Fac me tecum plangere.

Through her heart, his sorrow sharing,

All his bitter anguish bearing, Now at length the sword had pass'd.

Oh, how sad and sore distress'd
Was that mother highly blest

Of the sole-begotten one!
Christ above in torment hangs;
She beneath beholds the pangs
Of her dying glorious Son.

Is there one who would not weep, Whelm'd in miseries so deep

Christ's dear mother to behold! Can the human heart refrain From partaking in her pain,

In that mother's pain untold? Bruis'd, derided, curs'd, defil'd, She beheld her tender child

All with bloody scourges rent; For the sins of his own nation Saw him hang in desolation,

Till his spirit forth he sent.

O thou mother! fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above,

Make my heart with thine ac-
cord:

Make me feel as thou hast felt;
Make my soul to glow and melt

With the love of Christ my Lord.
Holy mother! pierce me through
In my heart each wound renew
Of my Saviour crucified:
Let me share with thee his pain,
Who for all my sins was slain,

Who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee, Mourning him who mourn'd for

me,

All the days that I may live: By the cross with thee to stay; There with thee to weep and pray, Is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins best! Listen to my fond request: Let me share thy grief divine;

Fac ut portem Christi mor- Let me, to my latest breath,

In my body bear the death

Of that dying Son of thine.

Wounded with his every wound,
Steep my soul till it hath swoon'd
In his very blood away;
Be to me, O virgin, nigh,
Lest in flames I burn and die,
In his awful judgment-day.
Christ, when thou shalt call me
hence,

Be thy mother my defence,
Be thy cross my victory;
While my body here decays,
May my soul thy goodness praise,
Safe in paradise with thee.
