Lisbon, and the next was appointed a Lord of the Admiralty, in 1715 he was created a Baronet; in 1718 he commanded the Britif Fleet in the Mediterranean; was Plenipotentiary to all the Princes and States in Italy, and to the Emperor of Morocco; and upon his Return, in Confideration of his having crush'd the labour'd Efforts of Spain to fet up a Power at Sea, by which the Arms of Britain were advanced to fuch a pitch of Reputation that her Flag gave Laws to the contending Parties, and her Crown enabled to refettle the Tranquillity of Europe, he was created a Peer. He married the Daughter of James Masters of East Langden Esq; and has left feven Sons and one Daughter the Lady Osborne, and is fucceeded in Honour and Eftate by the Hon. Pattee Byng Efq, Knight of the Shire for Bedford, Privy Counsellor, and Treasurer of the Navy; who married, in 1724, the youngest Sifter of the D. of Manchester.

In the Beginning of K. Wm's Reign, Ambaffador Extraordinary to the States General, afterwards of the Privy Council, Col. of a Reg. of Marines, First Commiffioner of the Admiralty, Ld Privy Seal, First Plenipotentiary at the Treaty of Ryfwick, Ld High Admiral of England and Ireland, and President of the Council. In 1707, appointed a Commiffioner to treat of a Union between England and Scotland; alfo Lord Lieut. of Ireland. His firft Wife was Margaret, fole Daughter and Heiress of Sir Robert Sawyer, Attor ney General in the Reign of K. Charles II. and by her had five Sons and five Daughters: By his fecond Wife Barbara, Daughter to Sir Henry Slingsby of Yorkshire Bar. he had one Daughter. In 1725, he mar ried Mifs Mary How, Sifter to Scroop Ld Vif. How, by whom he had no Iflue. Is fucceeded in Honour and Eftate by his eldeft Son the Ld Herbert, Capt. of the First Troop of Horfe Guards, and one of the Lords of the Bed chamber to the King.

His Lordfhip's Coachman, aged 8o, go of which he pailed in the Earl's Service, died the fame Day.

Thomas Foley, Baron Kidderminster in the County of Worcester, fo created in 1711. He married the Daughter of Serjeant Strode, by whom he has left Hlue, F Thomas, who fucceeds him in Honour and Eftate, and Elizabeth, both unmarry'd.

Dr Johnson, who about 4 Years ago cured him of an Ulcer in his Leg, after he had been given over by feveral eminent Surgeons as incurable; 500l. to St Thomas's Hofpital; D 500l. to the Poor of Chesterfield, where he was born; and ordered that his Tenants should not have their Rents raised, whatever Improvements they make.
