THE CHARTER.

GEORGE the Third, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth. To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting :

Petition of

and others

WHEREAS Our loving subjects, John Watts, Preamble. William Smith, Robert R. Livingston, Whitehead Hicks, William Livingston, Goldsbrow Banyar, and Samuel Jones, of our city of New-York, Esquires; Peter Van Brugh Livingston, and Peter Keteltas, of our said city of New-York, merchants; Walter Rutherford, and David Clarkson, of our said city of New-York, gentlemen; and Samuel Bard, of our said city of New-York, physician-by their humble petition presented unto our trusty and well- John Watts beloved William Tryon, Esq. our captain-general for a charter. and governor in chief, in and over our province of New-York, and the territories depending thereon in America, chancellor and vice-admiral of the same; and read in our council for our said province on the eighth day of September last past; did set forth, That sundry persons conceiving a public Association library would be useful as well as ornamental to our said city of New-York, did, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty-four, set on feot a subscription, in order to promote the design
