EVENING PRAYER.

Pfalm cxlvii. Laudate Dominum.

Praise the Lord; for it is a good thing to fing praifes uuto our God; yea, a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful.

2 The Lord doth build up Jerufalem: and gather together the outcafts of Ifrael.

3 He healeth thofe that are broken in heart and giveth medicine to heal their fickness.

4 He telleth the number of the ftars: and calleth them all by their names,

5 Great is our Lord, and great is his power: yea, and his wifdom is infinite

6 The Lord fetteth up the meek: and bringeth the ungodly down to the ground.

7 O fing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; fing praises upon the harp unto our God;

8 Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth: and maketh the grais to grow upon the mountains, and herb for the use of men.

9 Who giveth fodder unto the cattle: and feedeth the young ravens that call upon him.

10 He hath no pleasure in the ftrength of an horfe: neither delighteth he in any mans legs.

11 But the Lords delight is in them that fear him and put their trust in his mercy.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerufalem: praise thy God, a Sion.

13 For he hath made faft the bars of thy gates: and hath bieffed thy children within thee.

14 He maketh peace in thy borders: and filleth thee with the flour of wheat.

OBSERVATIONS.

princes, or in any man, fince they are mortal, and therefore are mere weakness, and even as nothing; but to enjoy true happinefs, we must confide alone in God, who is the Creator of the world, who loves truth and equity, does right to thofe that are oppreff:d, and delivers them, and who will reign for ever for the defence of his people and children.

Pfalm cxlviii. Laudate Dominum.

Praise the Lord of heaven: praise him in the height.
2 Praise him, all ye angels of his praise him, all

his hoft.

3 Praife him, fun and moon: praise him, all ye stars and light.

4 Praise him, all ye heavens: and ye waters that are above the heavens.

5 Let them praife the Name of the Lord: for he spake the word, and they were made, he commanded, and they were created.

6 He hath made them faft for ever and ever: he hath given them a law which shall not be broken.

7 Praise the Lord upon earth: ye dragons and all deeps; 8 Fire and hail, fnow and vapours: wind and ftorm, fulfilling his word;

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS.

Pfalm cxlvii.] This pfaim prefents us with two grand motives to induce us to love and praife God, 1. The firit, which is common to us with the Jews and with all men, is taken from the power and wonderful wif2. Another caufe for praifing God, dom by which he governs the world. is taken from the biefings he bestowed on the Jews; and particularly, in granting them, together with his protection, the peace and plenty which they enjoyed in the land of Canaan, and giving them his holy word and his law. In this refpecl, we have fill ftronger motives to praise the Lord, in confideration of the fpiritual bleflings youchfafed to us; among which, the most valuable priviledge of all is to be enlightened by the gospel and by the knowledge of his will.

9 Mountains and all hills: fruitful trees and all cedars; 10 Beafts and all cattle: worms and feathered fowls; 11 Kings of the earth and all people: princes and all judges of the world;

12 Young men and maidens, old men and children, praise the Name of the Lord for his Name only is excel lent, and his praise above heaven and earth.

13 He fhall exalt the horn of his people, all his faints fhall praife him: even the children of Ifrael, even the people that ferveth him.

Pfalm cxlix. Cantate Domino.

Sing unto the Lord a new fong: let the congregation of faints praite him.

2 Let Ifrael rejoice in him that made him: and let the children of Sion be joyful in their King.

3 Let them praife his Name in the dance: let them fing praifes unto him with tabret and harp.

4 For the Lord hath pleasure in his people: and helpeth the meek-hearted.

5 Let the faints be joyful with glory: let them rejoice in their beds.

6 Let the praises of God be in their mouth: and a twoedged fword in their hands;

7 To be avenged of the heathen and to rebuke the people;

8 To bind their kings in chains: and their nobles with links of iron.

PRACTICAL

OBSERVATION S.

Pfalm cxlviii.] In this pfalm, as well as in many others, we learn, 1. That it is God who has created, who preferves and governs all the creatures that are in heaven, or upon the earth; the angels, the fun, the moon, and all the ftars; that by his will, fire, hail, fnow, winds, mountains, trees, and the grafs, fubfift in a regular order, and produce the feveral effects which we daily obferve. 2. Let us confider, that all these creatures, except the angels, are deftitute of reafon, they are faid -to praise the Lord, only as they afford us motives to praise him, by the wonders which they fet before us; and therefore, that it is man's duty to blefs God, as he alone is capable of knowing him by his works.

Pfalm cl. Laudate Dominum.

Praife God in his holinefs: praife him in the firmament of his power:

2 Praite him in his noble acts: praife him according to his excellent greatness,

3 Praife him in the found of the trumpet: praise him upon the lute and harp.

4 Praife him in the cymbals and dances: praife him upon the ftrings and pipe.

5 Praite him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praife him upon the loud cymbals.

6 Let every thing that hath breath: praise the Lord.

PRACTICAL

OBSERVATIONS. Pfalm cxlix.] This pfalm fhould stir up all the true members of the church, to fing and publifh the praifes of God, and to rejoice in him continually. And as the Ifraelites fung hymns of joy, becaufe God had made them triumph over their enemies, and the kings that waged war with them; we ought likewife to praife him for the care he has taken of his church, and for all the favours we have received from him; but chiefly, for fubduing our fpiritual enemies, and putting it in our power to triumph more than conquerors over them ourselves, and to be in all things through Jefus Christ our Lord."

Pfalm cl.] This pfalm which is the laft of all, fhould inspire all of us with a holy zeal, to praife without ceafing the majefty of God, his infinite power, and all his adorable perfections. This ought all of us to do, not only with our lips and voice, but chiefly with the heart; remembering, that if the Jews in their worthip made ufe of mufical inftruments and many other ceremonies, God requires us to praife him and worthip him under the gofpel chiefly with the heart, and with all poffible zeal and affection. Let us, all our lives, difcharge fo just and pleafing a duty; and let us, to this end, make a good ufe of the many noble exhortations and divine patterns of devotion contained in the book of pfalms; that after we have praised and glorified God upon earth, we may glorify him eternally in the heavens with all the bleffed fpirits. Amen.,
