THE Prayers which stand first for each Morning and Evening, are from a "Course of Prayers for the Use of Families," printed by his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury many years ago, while he was yet a parish priest, and now reprinted in this selection by his Grace's most kind permission. The prayer marked 2, is from Bishop Wilson, formerly of Sodor and Man; 3, is by Bishop Barrington, formerly of Durham; and 4, by the late Bishop Copleston, of Llandaff: "being dead they yet speak." Some were written for parochial use at Alton, and the rest are, for the most part, taken from the private prayers in the Primer of King Edward VI., arranged and adapted for present use by the Society for promoting Christian Knowledge. The weekly Collects from the Liturgy are added, as appointed for daily use throughout the year.

DIRECTIONS

FOR

MORNING PRAYER.

It is recommended (see Address, p. 9,) that one of the family begin by reading a short portion of Scripture as a preparation; or, if no Scripture is selected to be read, then begin with these sentences:

O COME, let us worship, and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our maker. The Lord has safely brought us to the beginning of another day. Let us thank Him for this and all His mercies. Let us join in prayer to Him, that He may enable us to live this day in His faith and fear, as true servants of Christ our Saviour.

This may be repeated every morning before the prayer for the day.

MORNING PRAYERS.

SUNDAY MORNING.

ALMIGHTY and merciful God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this thy sacred day: give us grace to lift up our hearts in prayer to thee, our Maker and Preserver.

We confess our transgressions unto thee, O God: and our sin is before us. Make us truly sorry for it, as we ought to be; and have mercy upon us, most merciful Father, for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake. Thou hast promised to receive those who come to thee in His name; in His name we desire to seek thee: do thou accept us as thy repentant children, and give us peace with thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Make us to be a household fearing Thee. Endue us with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that we may amend our lives according to thy will. Take away the evil of our hearts, and implant in us that which is good. Enable us to do always what is pleasing in thy sight, and to shun what thou hast forbidden.

Thou hast been pleased, O Lord, to set apart one day out of seven, to be kept holy unto thyself. We thank thee for this opportunity of worshipping thee. May each day of rest bring us nearer to that eternal rest which thou hast prepared for the disciples of thy blessed Son. Increase our knowledge of Him. Strengthen our

Open our minds to receive thy word: and bless the instructions of our Ministers to ourselves, and to all. Make us more and more able, every week, to keep free from sin, and to serve thee better than before.

Extend thy blessing, O Lord, to the whole race of mankind. Convert the sinful; enlighten the ignorant, in this country and in all countries; and make thy way more widely known upon earth, thy saving health unto all nations.

These prayers would we humbly beseech Thee to receive for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Or this.

O LORD! on whom the eyes of all do wait, remember every creature of thine for good, and visit the world with thy mercy,

on this day of peace and rest! This is the day which thou hast given for the welfare of our souls; we will rejoice in it and be glad, and worship thy holy name, lifting up our prayers to the Throne of Grace, while thy holy Church throughout all the world shall unite in praise to the Majesty of thy glory.

O Thou God of holiness and truth, who lookest not on the outward appearance, but lookest on the heart, have mercy on us, and teach us this day to worship thee in spirit and in truth. Fill us with holy thoughts and heavenly desires. Give us grace to enter thy House with lowly and contrite hearts, that we may confess our sins with godly sorrow; and give us understanding to speak thy praise with joy and gladness. Hear, O Lord, in heaven, thy dwelling place, the voice of our fervent prayers, and when thou hearest, forgive, for the Saviour's sake.

Furthermore, we most humbly beseech thee, give us thy blessed Spirit, to renew our minds; to bring us to a right understanding of thy word; and to plant in us such a knowledge of thee, that we may continue thine for ever. O Heavenly Father, who didst on this first day of the week bring again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, raise up our souls unto newness of life; make us perfect in every good work to do thy will; and evermore work in us that which is well-pleasing in thy sight,
