CHAP. IV.

1 The temptation and fasting of Christ: 13 he overcometh the devil: 14 beginneth to preach: 16 the people of Nazareth admire his gracious words: 33 he cureth one possessed of a devil, 38 Simon's mother in law, 40 and divers other sick persons: 41 the devils acknowledge Christ, and are reproved for it: 43 he preacheth through the cities.

AND 'Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in 'those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

5 And the devil, taking him up into an high

ther; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. 1 Cor. xv. 45, 47: And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. The first man is of the earth, earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven.

CHAP. IV.

And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. 1 KINGS, xix. 8: And he [Elijah] arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7 If thou therefore wilt worship' me, all shall be thine.

8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a 'pinnacle2 of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God cast thyself down from hence:

10 For it is written, He shall give his 'angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash3 thy "foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not 'tempt the Lord thy God.

JOHN, xii. 31: Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out. do. xiv. 30: Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. REV. xiii. 2, 7: The dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. A. D. 30. 14¶And Jesus 'returned in the "power of the Spirit into "Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

16¶ And he came to 'Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, 'he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? DEUT. vi. 16: Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Ps. lxxviii. 18, 41 : And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. do. xcv. 8, 9: Ĥarden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness; when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. do. cvi. 14: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. ISA. vii. 11, 12: Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.

*JOHN, xiv. 30: The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. HEB. iv. 15: For we have not an high-priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

MAT. iv. 12: When Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee. JOHN, iv. 43: After two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

LUKE, vii. 22: Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. JAMES, ii. 5: Hearken, my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself : whatsoever we have heard done in 'Capernaum, do also here in thy 'country.

* Ps. xlv. 2: Grace is poured into thy lips. Isa. 1.4: The LORD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. MAT. xiii. 54: He taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished. MARK, vi. 2: And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? LUKE, ii. 47: All that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
