AKD liaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said onto him, Thou slialt not take a wife of the danghters of Canaan.

s Arise, go to Pailan-aram, tothehouse of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.

j Aad God Almighty bless thee, and moke thee fruitful, and multiply thee,that tiou mayest be a multitude of people;

4 And give thee the blefling of Abraham, to thee, and to thy feed with fbee; that thou mayeft inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God fare \mto Abraham.

5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram onto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebckah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that a* he blessed him, he gave him a charge, saying, Thou (halt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;.

7 Andthat Jacobobeyed his father, and his mot her, and was gone to Padan-aram;

I And Esau seeing that the daughters cf Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

j Then went Esau unto Ifhmael, and took onto the wives which he had Malm uth the daughter of Ithmael Abraham's fca, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

10 H And Jacob went out from Beerfceba, and went toward Haran.

II And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun wit set: and he took of the (tones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to deep.

16 And Jacob awaked out of his lleep, and he said, Surely the Lo R D is in this place; and I knew it not.

17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this ;'/ none other but the house of God, and this is die gate of heaven.

18 <([ And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had pat for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city nuas called Luz at the first.

10 ff And Jacob vowed a vow, faying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and raiment to put on,

ii So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then lhall the Lord be my God:

zx And this stone, which I hare set_/i>r a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

CHAP. XXIX. 1 Jacob coming to the well of Haran, 1 3 is enlertainedby Laban. 1 i Jacobcovenant'• eth for Rachel; x^and is deceived with Leah; 18 but marrieth Rachel also.

THEN Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

1 And he looked, and, behold, a well in. the field, and, lo, there tuere three flocks of Iheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the Hocks: and a great stone iuas upon the well's mouth.

3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the (heep, and put the stone again upon the well"* mouth in his place.

Jacob is entertained by Laban, GENESIS and fortieth for Leah and RasAeJ,

4- And Jacob said unto (hem, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.

5 And he said unto them, Know ye . Laban the son of Nahor > And they said,

We know him.

6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is welh and, behold, Rachel his daughter Cometh with the iheep.

7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle mould be gathered together: water ye the Iheep, and go and feed them.

8 And they said, We cannot, until all the stocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth j then we water the (lieep.

9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's slieep: for she kept them.

10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the Iheep of Laban his mother's brother; that Jacob went near, arid rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the stock of Laban his mother's brother.

11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

17. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that lie ivas Rcbekah'i son: and Ihe ran and told her father.

13 *J And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

14. Ana Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

15 And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what /hall thy wages bef

16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder ivas Lean, and the name of the younger ivas Rachel.

17 Leah t'.'as tender eyed} but Rachel was beautiful, and wellfavoured.

18 ^f And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger da\ighter.

19 And Laban said, It is better that I t;ivc her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

11 And Jacob said unto Laban, Give

me my wife, for ray days are fulfills that I may go in unto her.

22 And Laban gathered together the men of the place, and made a sea

23 q[ And it came to pass in the eve ing, that he took Leah his daughrt and brought her to him; and he we in unto her.

18 ^ And Jacob did so, and fulfillet her week: and he gave him Rachel hi daughter to wife also.

29 And Laban gave to Rachel hit daughter Bilhah his handmaid to bi her maid.

30 And he went in also -unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven othei years.

31 And when the Lord saw that Leah •was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel ivas barren. *

32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and me called his name Reuben: for (he said, Surely the Lo R n hath looked upon mv affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

33 And stie conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lo R D hath heard that I ivas hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

3+ And (he conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husoand be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

35 And slic conceived again, and bare a son; and she said, Now will I praise the Lo a D: therefore she called his name Jitdah, and left bearing.

CHAP. XXX. 1 Rachel's barrenness. 22 She beareth Joseph. 27 Jacob's covenant with Laban.

37 By his policy he becomes rich.

AND when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her filter; and said unto Jacob, Giv« me children, or else 1 die.

17 «J And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found savour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience, that the Lord hath blessed me for thy fake.

*9 And he said unto hint, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how tby cattle was with me.

31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:

J2 I will pal's through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and os such shall be my hire.

33 So shall my righteousness anfwerfor me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that it not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep" that (hall be counted stolen with me. _ 34 And Laban (aid, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.

36 And he set three days' tourney betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.

37 «U And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hasel and chefnut tree j and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which •was in the rods.

_ :.S And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs, when the flocks came to drink; that they should conceive when they came to drink.

39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringUraked, speckled, and spotted.

40'And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban: and he put his own flocks by themselves; and put them not unto Laban's cattle.

41 And it came to pass whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.

4* But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.

43Andthemanincreasedexceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and afles.

CHAP. XXXI. t Jacob departethsrom Laban. 22 Laban

AND he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that <wat our father's; and of that which oo«/\)ur father's hath he gotten all this glory.

1 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it ivai not toward him as before.

3 And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred: and I will be with thee.

4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,

5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before: but the God of my father hath been with me.

6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.

7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.

11 And hesaid, Lift upnow thine eyei and see, all the rams which leap upo the cattle are ringstraked, speckled and gristed: for I have seen all that La ban doeth unto thee.

13 I am the God of Beth-el, when thou anointedst the pillar, and when thou rowedst a vow unto me •. now arise get thee out from this land, and returr unto the land of thy kindred.

1,4 And Rachel and Leah answered, and said unto him, // there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?

j 5 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.

16 For all the riches which God hatb. taken from our father, that is oui's anc? our children's: now then whatsoever God hath said unto thae do.

17 Then Jacob rose up, and set lus sons and his wives upon camels;

»8 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.

19 And Laban went to (hear his stieep: and Rachel had stolen the images that •were her father's.

ao And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.

ai So he fled with all that he had: and he rose up, and pasted over the river, and set his face tvward the mount Gilead.

ii «J And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.

*3 And he took his brethren wyth him, and pursued aster him seven days' journey 5 and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.

14 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

44 *\ Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. .

45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it upj'or a pillar.

47 And Laban called it Jerar-sahadutha-. but Jacob called it Galeid.
