4 Aed it came to pass in process of t'aai, that tbe children of Ammon iisie waj against Israel.

5 Ami it was so, that wheu the chiliita of Ammon made war against luad, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Je^usih out of the land of Tob i

6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, lad be our captain, that we may fight «ki the children of Ammon.

; And Jephthah said unto the children ot Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and »ay ire ye come unto me now ~when re ire in distress?

8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jcfi'athih, Therefore we turn again to tiae now, that thou mayest go with us, ind fight against the children of Amman, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to %tt against the children of Ammon, ind the Lord deliver them before me, tall I be your head?

to And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The Lo R D be witness between ns.ifwedonotsoaccordingtothy words.

Ii Then Jephthah went with the elder* of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them? and Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mr/.peh.

ix And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ainmon, faying, What hast thou to do with me, flat thou art come against me to fight in my land t

13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away ray land, when they came up out os Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

14 And jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

15 And said unto him, Thus faith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children os Ammon:

lfi But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadefh;

17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, fay ing,Let me,I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the kiE»of EJom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto

the king oi"Moab: but he would not consent: anft Isi.icl abode in Kadem. .18 Then they went aloili? through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab': for Arnon nuai the border of Moab.

19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heslibon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

10 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jah:i7, and fought against Israel.

zi And the Lo R O God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

22 And they possessed all the coast* of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness eveil unto Jordan.

23 So now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and lhouldest thou possess it?

24. Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosli thy god giveth thee to possess ? So whomloever the Lord our God (hall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor king of Moab? did lie ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

26 While Israel dwelt in Heslibon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

a? Wherefore I havenot sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to waragainst me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day- between the children of Israel and the children os Ammon. .-..• i 18 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him. ,

29 Then the Spirit of the Lo R n came upon Jephthah, and he passed ovev Gilead, and Manasseh, and palled over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh .of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

31 So Jephthah passed over, unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into bis hands.

33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 % And Jephthah came to Mizpeh vmto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thouhastbroughtme very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I haveopened my mouth unto the Lor n, and I cannot go back.

36 And she said unto him, My father, jf thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, e-ven of the children of Ammon.

37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that* I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away far two months: and (he went with her companions, and bewailed her ■virginity upon the mountains.

39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he bad vowed: and me knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament! the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days- in a year.

and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumciled Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for (lie pleaseth me well.

4. But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he fought an occasion against the Philistines. For at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath : and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

6 And the Spirit of the Lor D came mightily upon him; and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

7 And he went down and talked with the woman; and slie pleased Samson well.

8 And after a time, he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion; and, behold, there •was a swarm of bees, and honey in the carcase of the lion.

9 And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.

Io fl So his father went down unto the woman, and Samson made there a feast: for so used the young men to do.

11 And it came to pass, when they saw him, that the_y brought thirty companions to be with him.

n fl And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets, and thirty change of garments:

13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then (hall ye give me thirty sheets, and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

i+ And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.

i s And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson's wife,

Entice thy husoand, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire have ye called us to take that we have i ts it notso?

16 And Samson's wife weptbefore him and said, Thou dost but hateme, and lov est me not: thou hast put forth a riddli unto the children of my people, and has not told it me. And he said unto her Behold, I have not told it my father no my mother, and (hall I tell it thee?

17 And she wept before him the sevei days, while the feast lasted: and i came to pass on the seventh day, that hi told her, because slie lay sore upon him and slie told the riddle to the children o her people.

_ 18 And the men of the city said unti him on the seventh day before the iui went down, What is sweeter than honey and what is stronger than a lion? and h said unto them, If ye had not plowc< with my heifer, ye had not found ou my riddle.

19 f And the Spirit of the Lord cam upon him, and he went down to Alhke Ion, and slew thirty men of them, am took their spoil, and gave change of gar ments unto them which expounded th riddle. And his auger was kindled, am he went up to his fathers house.
