that depart from me (hall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lokd, the fountain of living waters.

14 Heal me, O Lord, and 1 (hall be healed; save me, aud I lUall be laved: for thou art my pi-iile.

15 Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the Lo a D ? let it come now.

16 As for me, I have not hastened from being * pallor to follow thee: neither have I desired the woeful day; thou knowelt: that which came out of my lips was right before thee.

17 Be not a terror unto me: thou art my hope in the day of evil.

iS Let them be confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them'the day of evil, and deitroy them with double destruction.

19 Thus laid the Lord unto me J Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people,' whereby the kings of Judali dome in, and by the which they go out, aud in all the gates of Jerusalem 5

to And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the Lor u, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of -Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates:

a 1 Thus faith the I.o R I> ; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;

11 Neither carry forth a burden out of .your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

23 But they obeyed not, neither inclined their eae, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.

24. And it (hall come to pass, ifye diligently hearken unto me, faith the Lor o, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the (abbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;

15 Then stiall there enterinto thegates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city lhall remain for ever.

26 And they (hall come from the cities of Judah, and from die places about Jeru<klem, and from the land of Benjamin, .and from the plain, and from the mountains, aiul from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices

of praise, unto the house of the Lor D. »7 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a sire in the gates thereof, and it lhall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it (hall not be quenched.

CHAP. XVIII. 1 Under the tyfe of a fatter Cod Jheiseth hit absolute power oj disposing of natoru, 11 Judgements threatened to Judah.

THE word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, » Arise, and go down to the potter'> house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 Then I went down to the potter'1 house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 And the velsel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: (b he made it again another vessel, »s seemed good to the potter to make if,

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

6O houseoflsrael.cannot Idowithyou as this potter»faith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so*w ye in mine hand, U house of Israel.

7 At -what instant I shall speak concerning anation, aud concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and topulldown, arid to deitroy ;'/;

8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I wi" repent of the evil that I thought to it unto them.

9 And at what instant I (hall speak concerning a nation, and concerning! kingdom, to build and to plant iV;

10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

, 11 fl Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitanti*" Jerusalem, saying, Thus faith theLoR »; Behold, I frame ev il against you, and devise a device against you- return ye now every one from his evil way, and nukt your ways and your doings good.

tx And they said, There it no hope: but we will walk after our own devicei, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 Therefore thus faith the Lo»BI Aik ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin ot Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not call up;

1$ To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hiding; everyone that passeth thereby sliall be astonished, and wag his head.

17 I will scatter them as with an ejfi wind before the enemy j I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18 Then said tliey, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law sliall not perilh from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

19Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

Jo Shallcvil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stooa before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

t» Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and h widows; and let their men be put to Heath j Itt their young men be stain by the sword in battle.

M Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou (halt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

13 Yet, Lor D, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy fight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

THUS faith the Lord, Go and get a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests;

» And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,

1 And fay, Hear ye the word of the Lord, 0 Icings of Judali, and inhabi

Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judali, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

5 They have built also the high place, of Baal, to burn their sons with mt fur burnt offerings, unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

6 Therefore, behold, the days come, faith the Loud, that this place sliall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter.

7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that feck their lives s and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.

8 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that palleth thereby shall be astonistied and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

9 And I will cause them to eat the flesli of their sons and the flesti of their daughters, and they sliall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitneft, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, sliall straiten them.

10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee,

11 And ssialt say unto them, Thus faith the Lo R D of holts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they (hall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

11 Thus will I do unto this place, faith the Lo R D , and to the inhabitants thereof, and ei'fn make this city as Topheti

13 And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings ofjudah, (hall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.

14.Then came Jeremiah from Tophet, whither the Lor D had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the Lor D'shouse; and said toall the people,

l Pafhur smiting Jeremiah, receive!A a uenv name, and a fearful doom. T Jeremiah compiainelh of contempt, 10 of treachery, 14 and of his birth.

NOW Pafhur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.

i Then Pastiur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that •were in the high gate of Benjamin, which ivas by the house of the Lor D.

3 And it came to pals on the morrow, that Pastiur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The Lor D hath not called thy name Pastiur, but Magor-missabib.

4 For thus faith the Lord, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes (hall behold it: and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and lie sliall carrythem captive into Babylon, and stiall stay them with the sword.

j Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judnh will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.

6 And thou, Pastiur, and all that dwell in thine house, shall go into captivity: and thou malt come to Babylon, and there thou slialt die, and (halt be buried there, thou, and allthy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied lies.

7^0 Lor D, thoU hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.

8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the Lo R D was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.

9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his ivord was in mine heart as a burning fire flint up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

11 But the Lord/Vwithme as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they (hall not prevail: they mail be greatly ashamed; for they stiall not prosper: their everlasting confusion stiall never be forgotten.

ix But, Olord of hosts, that tried the righteous, and seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause.

13 Sing unto the Lord, praise ye the Lor D : lor he hath delivered the foul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

14 ^f Curled be the day wherein I was born: let not the day Wherein my mother bare me be blessed.

1 j Cursed be the man that brought ridings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.

16 And let that man be as the cities which the Lord overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the lhouting at noontide;

17 Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb t> bt always great with me.

18 Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that roy days should lie consumed with shame i

CHAP. XXI. 1 Zedekiah enquiresh the event of Nebuchadrezzar's nvar. 3 A hardjiegeforetd.!. THE word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lor D, when kinesZedekiah sent unto him Pastiur the (on of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,

1 Enquire, I pray thee, of the LoRn for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if ib !>e that the Lord will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

3 qj Then said Jeremiah onto them, Thus (hall ye fay to Zedekiah:

4 Thus faith the Lo R D God of Uraelj Behold, I will turn back the weaponsof war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.

5 And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with 1 strong arm, even in anger, an.l in sery> and in great wrath. »

6 And I will smite the inhabitants 0 this city, both man and beast: they mast die of a great pestilence. . Cliap. xxii. An exhortation to repentance.

Tkt captivity foretold.

7 Andafterward.-saith the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah kingof Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemiej, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he (hall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

i And unto this people thou slialt hj, Thus faith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

9 He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he (hall live, and his life (hall be unto him for a prey.

10 For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, faith the Lord: it (hall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he (hall burn it with fire.

n And touching the house of the king of Judah, Jay, Hear ye the word of the Lord;

I* 0 house of David, i'ms faith the Lord; Execute judgement in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

13 Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, faith the Lord; which fay, Who shall come down against us ? or who (hall en'er into our habitations?

14. But I will punifli you according to the fruit of your doings, faith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it (hall devour all things round about it.

CHAP. XXII. 1 Jin exhortation to repentance. 10 The

judgement of Shallum, 20 of Coniah.

THUS faith the Lord; Go down to the house of the kingof Judah, and (peak there this word,

*Andsay,HearthewordoftheLoRD, 0 king of Judah, that fittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, wd thy people that enter in by these gates:

1 Thus faith the Lord; Execute ye judgement and righteousness, and deliT«r the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor; and do no wrong, do no vio

lence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

4. For if ye do this thing indeed, then (hall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in enanots and on horles, he, and his servants, and his people.

5 But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, faith the Lord, that this house (hall become 1 desolation.

6 For thus (aith the Loud unto the king's house of Judah; Thou ar/G Head unto me and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.

7 And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they (hall cut down thy choice cedars, and.cast them into the fire.

8 And many nations (hall pass by this city, and they (hall fay every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this great city?

9 Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lo n D their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

10 f[ Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goetii away: for he (hall retwrn no more, nor fee his native country.

11 For thus faith the Lord touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Jofiah h is father, which went forth out of this place; He (hall not return thither any more:

12 But he (hall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and (hall fee this land no more.

13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that ul'eth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

14. That faith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieted with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

15 Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgement and justice, and then i: nvas well with him?

16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then :'/ ivas wellnuith him: ixias not this to know me? (kith the Lord.

17 But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness; and for to (hed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

3 And I will gather the remnant t: my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they (hall be fruitful and increase.

4 And I will set up Ihepherds over them which (hall feed them: and they (hall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither (hall they be lacking, faith the Lord.

5 Behold, the days come, faith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King (hall reign and prosper, and (hall execute judgement and justice in the earth.

6 In his days Judah (hall be saved, and Israel (hall dwell safely: and this it bis name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

9 «fl Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones (hake; I am like: a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the Lord, and because of the words of his holiness.

10 For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their courie is evil, and their force it not right.

11 For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, faith the Lord.

Wherefore their way (hall bennto them as slippery tuayt in the darknels: they (hall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, fw*the year of their visitation, faith the Lord.

13 And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied iR Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.

14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: theyconimit adultery, and walk in lies: theyitrengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
