PREFACE.

This book is a compilation of the Prophet Joseph Smith's sermons and religious doctrinal writings as preserved in the authorized "History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," written under his personal direction and supervision, and now published in six volumes.

The Prophet's teachings herein presented are of great value and interest to the earnest seeker after truth. Being largely devoted to amplifying and expounding the Holy Scriptures, they are supplementary to what is contained in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.

It should be understood that the Prophet's sermons, as recorded in the History of the Church, are not word for word as he preached them. His scribes wrote as best they could in longhand the substance of his remarks, and consequently the reports are incomplete.

In this work the Prophet's utterances are arranged according to subject and placed in alphabetical order, so that they may be referred to readily. It is hoped that in this form they will be of service to the student of the Gospel.
