PREFACE. THE long interval since the last issue of our collections has been occasioned by various circumstances. The recent war proving a serious embarrassment in the work of publication; the lamented removal by death of the accomplished and efficient editor of the preceding volumes; the slow accumulation of materials for a new issue; and the distinct enterprise undertaken by the Society, under the auspices of the state government, of a series of volumes on the Documentary History of Maine; have contributed to arrest this special work of the Society. The publication of this volume was committed to the direction of the subscribers, the supervision of the press being assigned to Rev. Dr. Dike. It has been the endeavor of the committee, as will be seen, to fulfil one object of the Society, which is to secure biographical notices of deceased associates, who by their lives have laid the Society under obligation to perpetuate the remembrance of their public service by fitting commemoration. Efforts have been made in vain to obtain notices of others who have been prominent in the annals of the Society, which, it is hoped, may appear in another volume.
