THE present reprint of the celebrated "TRAVELS OF GULLIVER" being intended simply as an addition to our increasing but yet not too numerous-stock of books of recreation, any remarks on its origin or supposed allusions would be out of place. Any interest, in fact, which the Work might derive from such circumstances has long since passed away; so that in the present day, and especially in a series like the present, it can only take its place amongst other imaginative productions, calculated to entertain a leisure hour, and conduce to harmless mirth. Fairly to entitle it to this last epithet, it was necessary, indeed, to make some slight abridgments, which, however, are few and unimportant, and certainly do not in any way detract from the real value and interest of the Work. On the whole the Editor hopes he has succeeded in providing what has hitherto been an acknowledged desideratum- -an edition of "GULLIVER'S TRAVELS" adapted for the reading of ALL.
He thinks himself fortunate in having secured the assistance of the able pencil of Mr. H. K. Browne in the pictorial department, whose designs have also been happily rendered by the engraver, Mr. J. Cooper.
