FAMILY PRAYERS,

CHIEFLY FROM THE LITURGY OF THE

CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

BY

F. J. W. COLLINGWOOD.

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves,
and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin.”—2 Chron. vii. 14.

PREFACE.

As I think and feel that there is a great responsibility attached to every master of a family; what surer mode of acquitting himself well under it can there be, than leading his household in daily supplication to the throne of grace, and, by the united sacrifice of prayer and thanksgiving, endeavouring to secure at the same time both the Divine approval and assistance.

To facilitate the performance of this duty is my object in publishing this Selection of Prayers-chiefly from our Liturgy-wherein the household have the privilege of joining and responding more than in most compilations of Family Prayer.

In the evening I suggest that a Chapter of the Bible (say-the Evening Lesson) should be daily read either before or after prayers, and with this view I have made the Evening Prayers rather shorter than those of the Morning.

SUNDAY MORNING.

Let us Pray.

LMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against Thy Divine Majesty, provoking most justly Thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings, the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for Thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please Thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of Thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
