NEW YEAR'S GIFTS.

It is pleasant to receive gifts from friends; they are
tokens to us of their affection and good will, and they

as remembrances of those who bestowed them,
particularly when they are far removed from us.

Few of us have not, at some period of our lives,
especially in the days of our childhood, received what
we call New Year's Gifts -- little presents given with
good wishes for our happiness in the year we were just
entering upon. But there has been one Friend, above
all, who has multiplied his gifts and mercies upon us :
they are so many that they cannot be reckoned up in
order;" and, “ if we would declare and speak of them,
they are more than can be numbered.” It was He that
“ breathed into" our 6 nostrils the breath of life.” His
power, though unseen, shielded our years of helpless
infancy. He set his seal of adoption on

our brow
when we were brought to Him in baptism, since when
his Spirit has striven with, and strengthened us; and
He has set before us the blessed hope of everlasting
life, and a crown of glory that fadeth not away. He
gave his own life a ransom for our sins; and forasmuch
as our own doings are “nothing worth,” and we have no
