The General Confeffion; the People kneeling.

ALL gracious God, and most merciful

Father, we would humbly confefs in thy fight the various fins and follies of our past lives. We have departed from the ways of thy commandments. We have followed too much the devices and defires of our own hearts. We have expofed ourselves to thy righteous difpleasure. Our only hope is in thy mercy, which endureth for ever. We bow before the throne of grace, imploring thy pardon. Be not ftrict to mark; be not fevere to punifh our offences. O God, have mercy upon the work of thy hands. Spare us, good Lord. Forgive and accept thy people, according to thy promifes made to the truly penitent, by Jefus Chrift. Enable us, by the affiftance of thy holy Spirit, to forfake every evil way; to correct whatever is wrong in our temper and conduct, and to delight in doing thy will; that we may obtain from

thee,

thee, the God of all mercy, the forgiveness of our fins, and an inheritance among them that are fanctified, through the redemption which is in Jefus Chrift.

Amen.

¶ Then let the Minister read the following Petitions; the People ftill kneeling.

O THOU righteous and holy fovereign of heaven and earth, give us, we beseech thee, worthy apprehenfions of thyfelf, the one only living and true God. May our fouls be poffeffed with an habitual veneration of thy divine majefty, and with a thankful admiration of thy infinite goodness and mercy. Difpofe us to maintain a constant sense of thy prefence with us, and to act as becometh those who are accountable for their whole conduct to thee, who haft appointed a day in which thou wilt judge the world in righteousness, by Jefus Chrift. Amen.

O THOU, the great searcher of hearts,

who loveft truth, and hateft deceit, as we

are

are bleffed with the glorious light of the gofpel, may we walk as children of the light, and profeffors of the name of Chrift, and feel the mighty power and influence of his religion upon our hearts and lives. Cleanfe us from all hypocrify and guile, and give us that Chriftian candour and fimplicity of fpirit, that godly fincerity, which is acceptable in thy fight. In the whole courfe of our actions, let it be our defire and delight to imitate the example of our bleffed Saviour, who went about continually doing good to the bodies and fouls of men. Let the law of kindnefs dwell on our lips; and putting away all lying, and clamour, and evil speaking, may we fpeak the truth in love, and manifeft ourfelves to be the fincere difciples of Jefus Chrift, by loving one another. Amen.

WHILST in this world, affist us, gracious God, to perform the duties of the feveral stations in which thy providence

hath

hath placed us, that we may glorify thee on earth, and serve our generation according to thy will. May all thy difpenfations towards us be fanctified. Make us thankful for every good thing we enjoy, and for all the profperous events which befal us. If thou fee fit to exercise us with affliction and suffering, may we be enabled meekly to acquiefce in thine appointments. Grant that tribulation may work patience, patience experience, and experience hope, that hope which maketh; not ashamed. Perfuaded that all the circumftances of our lives are under thy direction, may we chearfully furrender all our interefts and concerns to thy difpofal. May we regard it as the matter of our principal care to improve all events, as the means of making us wifer and better, and of carrying on the great work of our falvation. And whenever it fhall please thee, the fupreme difpofer of life and death, to put an end to this our present state of trial, may we leave the world with a well grounded hope of

thy

thy mercy and favour, and of an admiffion into thy heavenly and everlasting king

dom.

Guide us,

People.

O Lord, by thy counsel, and bring

us at last to glory, through Jesus Christ.

The General Interceffion.

Minifter.
