THIRD PASSOVER.

Sect. 64. The Pharisees blame the disciples for eating with unwashen hands,

1 John After these things Jesus walked in Galilée; for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

Mat. Then came to Jesus Scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem.

Mar. Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the Scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

Mar. And when they saw some of his disciples eat
bread with defiled (that is to say, with unwashen)
hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and
all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft,
eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
And when they come from the market, except
they wash, they eat not. And many other
things there be, which they have received to
hold, as the washing of cups and pots, brazen
vessels, and of tables.

Mar. Then the Pharisees and the Scribes asked him,
Why walk not thy disciples

According to the tradition of the elders,
but eat bread with unwashen hands?
Mat. Saying, Why do thy disciples transgress

The tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. Mar. He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (See Matt. ver. 7,-9.) For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such things ve do.

Mar. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Mat. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your own tradition?

Mat. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother:

And, he that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Mar. For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother:

And, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Mar. But ye say, it a man shall say to his father or mother,

It is Corban, that is to say, a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me:

¡Mar.

He shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother.

Mat. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or bis mother,

It is a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me,

And honour not his father or his mother, be shall be free.

Mat. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

Mar. Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition which ye have delivered; and many such ike things do ye.

Mat. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, say
ing, S. This people draweth nigh unto me with
their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips, but
their heart is far from me: But in vain they do wor-
ship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of
men. See Mark, ver. 6,-8.

Mat. And he called the multitude, and said unto them,
Hear and understand.

Mar. And when he had called all the people unto him, he
said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you,
and understand.

Mar. There is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him:

But the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

Mat. Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man:
But that which cometh out of the mouth, this
defileth a man.

Mar. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Mat. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Know-
est thou that the Pharisees were offended after they
heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every
plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted,
shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind
leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch.

Mat. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare
unto us this parable.

Mar. And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the para

ble.

Mar. And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also?

Mat. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

Mat. Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth,

Goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

Mar. Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him,

Mar.

Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

Mar. And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

Mat. But those things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and they defile the man. Mat. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications.

Thefts, false witness, blasphemies. Mar. For from within out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolish

ness:

Mar. All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mat. These are the things which defile a man:

Mat. But to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Sect. 65. Jesus cures the woman of Canaan's daughter, in the country of Tyre and Sidon.

Mat. Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts ra sgn, the parts, the country) of Tyre and Sidon. Mar. And from thence he arose, and went into the borders (logia, the parts, which bordered upon Galilee) of Lyre and Sidon.

Mar. And entered into an house, and would have no man
know it; but he could not be hid. For a certain
woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit,
heard of him.

Mat. And behold a woman of Canaan came out of the
same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy
on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is
grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered
her not a word. And his disciples came and be-
sought him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth
after us.
But he answered and said, I am not sent
out unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Mat. Then came she and worshipped him,

Saying, Lord, help me.

Mar. And came and fell at his feet: (The woman was a
Greek, a Syrophenician by nation)

And she besought him, that he would cast forth
the devil out of her daughter.

Mar. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: For it is not meet to take the childrens bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

Mat. But he answered and said,

It is not meet to take the childrens bread, and to cast it to dogs.

Mat. And she said, Truth, Lord; yet the dogs

Eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table.

Mar. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table

Mar.

Eat of the childrens crumbs.

Mar. And he said unto her, For this saying, go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

Mat. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt. Mat. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Mar. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. Sect. 66. In Decapolis, Jesus cures one that had an im· pediment in his speech.

Mar. And again departing from the coasts of (opiwv) Tyre and Sidon, &c. to the end.

Sect. 67. The second miraculous dinner is given on a
mountain near the sea of Galilee.
Mat. And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto
(ag) the sea of Galilee, and went up into a moɑn-
tain, and sat down there. And great multitudes
came unto him, having with them those that were
lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and
cast them down at Jesus' feet, and he healed them:
Insomuch that the multitude wondered when they
saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the
lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glori
fied the God of Israel.

Mat. Then Jesus called his disciples unto him,
Mar. In those days the multitude being very great, and
having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto
him,

Mar. And saith unto them, I have compassion on the mul-
titude,

Because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat.

Mat. And said, I have compassion on the multitude, Because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat.

Mat. And I will not send them away fasting, lest they

faint in the way.

Mar. And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way.

Mar. For divers of them came from far.

Mar. And his disciples answered him, From whence can

a man

Satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

Mat. And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we
Have so much bread in the wilderness as to fill
so great a multitude?

Mat. And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye?
And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
Mar. And he asked them, How many loaves have ye?
And they said, Seven. See ver. 7.

Mar. And he commanded the people to sit down on

Sect. 68. In Dakmanutha, the Pharisees demand the sign
from heaven a second time. See § 48. 86.
Mar. And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question

Seeking of him a sign from heaven,
Tempting him.

Mat. The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came,
And tempting,

Desired him that he would shew them a sign from
heaven.

Mat. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day, for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky, but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

Mar. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign?

Mat. A wicked and an adulterous generation seeketh after la sign.

Mar. Verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given to this generation.

Mat. And there shall be no sign given unto it,

Mat. But the sign of the prophet Jonas.

Ma. And he left them, and departed.

Mar. And he left them, and entering into the ship again, departed to the other side.
